"Do your research and ask your friends - Good place to 'Retire in Place', as long as you can deal with a Culture of Fear"

    Pros

Most all coworkers are great to work with - although there is a significant portion that have 'retired in place'. Have an annual 'incentive' program if the company meets its goals. If you are just starting your career or looking for a place to put in your time before you retire (meaning that you are willing to put up with being considered an interchangeable "resource' instead of a person), this place is for you.

    Cons

Annual layoffs around the holidays each year are so much of the culture that they are called the annual 'Christmas Presents'. Line staff openly uses the words 'Toxic', 'Culture of Fear', and 'Passive-Aggressive management' in day-to-day conversations. Some directors are openly put down in public by other directors.

Appearances are more important that delivery. Should a health care payer be run by a doctor or a lawyer? CEO is the latter and more interested in his political career. Dollars drive decisions.

Have been doing a lot a 'come work for us' social media in the past year to backfill all the good people now that the economy has improved. Training program is in name only - career development is a once a year conversation with your manager as a checkoff item at your annual review. Training is available, as long as it does not cost anything and it is on your own time.

Do your research, ask your friends, and carefully consider if the cool-aid is a flavor you can deal with. Just go in with your eyes open.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the way and let your people do their jobs. People are leaving because they do not feel respected or safe that they will not be randomly RIFfed.

    Pros

Great benefits package; you can work there for a long time if you wish

    Cons

Upper management completely out of touch with workers; projects cancelled regularly; lip service paid to agile and cloud but reality is waterfall and too much on-prem; Mac laptops poorly supported, locked down

    Advice to Management

Smaller deliverables instead of quarterly releases; get rid of overly stringent IT restrictions and other red tape hampering engineers; talk TO employees, not AT them

I worked at Cambia Health Solutions (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful, smart employees. Visionary CEO with heart. Forward-thinking strategy. Committed to accountability for execution.

    Cons

HR is seeking executors/doers who tow the line and they are not seeking thinkers. Executives with excellent pedigrees have determined where the company needs to go and they need to get there fast. Even if the thinking is in-line with the vision and will account for more growth, the direction from managers to employees is to keep your head down. Self preservation among the managerial ranks up through SVPs is rampant, organization-wide, resulting in a lack of collaboration and leadership. Meeting short-term business goals is rewarded. Teamwork is not. Department heads tell their department that it is not their role to develop people. Everyone is an individual contributor from soup to nuts. As new roles open they are almost never filled with internal people and the desire is not for people to stay. Internal candidates realize that their only option for growth is to leave.

    Advice to Management

As you meet your forward-thinking business goals, please remember that your employees are an investment and asset that will help you get there. They care for your company and deserve the same respect and care as they manage through change. Treat them as if they hold the key to unlocking your vision, because they do, and be aware that personal and company growth are most impactful when they are not mutually exclusive.

I worked at Cambia Health Solutions as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cambia has a lot of great ideas about how to transform the healthcare industry, and a lot of the people I met working there were genuinely helpful and interested in seeing the company succeed. The internship program has great aspects like mentors and capstones that are meant to help ensure interns are growing and learning.

    Cons

I don't think the people leading the company fully understand the company's new vision for itself, as their explanations were limited and repetitive. I was not given enough work to do to keep me occupied, and based on conversations I had with others, I was not alone. I never had a mentor, was let go of before the end of my internship (based on there not being enough work) therefore did no capstone.

    Advice to Management

Train your leaders in transformational leadership styles! And when you hire talented people, make sure you use them effectively!

I have been working at Cambia Health Solutions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, nice facilities. Great place to work if you are a white male. Not a good place if you are a woman or a person of color. On the surface encourages innovation and diversity but all decision making is concentrated with a few senior management team members who are out of touch.

    Cons

A very white male dominated leadership team and culture. Cambia will not be able to serve consumers or fulfill their vision unless the executive team learns how to lead and allows for diversity of gender, ethnicity and thought. There are too many in roles of authority who are allowed to disrespect or undermine individuals with differing perspectives, background and gender.

    Advice to Management

Stop talking to yourselves and get out of your Portland bubble. Listen to to your employees

    Pros

Lots of talented people. All the right assets to make a big play in health care. Pretty good benefits (the best 401k matching commitment I have experienced from an employer) and career opportunities if in a Regence market or near a regional hub.

    Cons

Career opportunities not good if outside of a Regence market / geography. Very Regence service area geography focused. Wants to be a national player but cannot break free from legacy baggage and myopic, in-Regence territory thinking. Business as usual, maintain the status quo and not invented here mentalities are prevalent despite the overwhelming messaging from the leadership to change. Little real accountability for enforcing or achieving real change and innovation. Lots of silos, fiefdoms and turf wars. Lacks a nationwide recognizable brand and a cohesive go-to-market strategy across businesses (lots of disjointed standalone solutions and duplication of effort / development) .

    Advice to Management

More walk (execution and accountability), less talk (vision, strategy, cause). Saying all the right things only gets you so far if you don't back that up with doing the right things and delivering on stated goals. Need more leaders from outside of healthcare and outside of Regence 4 states to achieve growth goals, vision and transform from a regional player into a nationwide solution / service provider.

    Pros

Smart people, I could work from home since the Seattle office was sold and my job moved remote. No problem!

    Cons

Disconnected from reality of job market. I easily found an upgraded job for more than 20k what they were paying.

    Advice to Management

Stop paying attention to your fancy upper management ($$$$) and acknowledge your value--- the employees.

    Pros

Salary and benefits are pretty great. Individual contributors (anyone outside of management/leadership) are mostly talented and great to work with.

    Cons

Cambia is controlled by the cash cow that is the for-profit Regence Health Plan. The entire company is ran by industry dinosaurs. Cambia has zero empathy for the people they exist to serve - both the public and their employees. The company is inundated with old corporate IT and clunky, disjointed DHS companies.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to today's technology, design, user experiences and THE PEOPLE you build products and services for. Do some research and walk the talk already. Consolidate and move faster.
