I have been working at Cambridge Associates, LLC as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Gained lots of work experience as to how business actually works. Was responsible for the same tasks as many full time employees which made me feel like I was actually contributing to the company.

    Cons

Has an old school business approach because of their largely older base of employees, though they are actively trying to improve this.

I worked at Cambridge Associates, LLC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are just starting your career in finance, Cambridge is an excellent spot, at least for a little while. *Note that departments at Cambridge differ widely in culture.

    - You can learn a lot very quickly if you push yourself to keep learning/networking
    - You have access to the best investment managers in the world
    - You will work with intelligent people who are likely of your age group
    - It is nearly expected that you will take one of the financial exams (CFA, CAIA)
    - Exit opportunities include: IR, business school, endowment work, as well as moving to other fields
    - good benefits package

    Cons

    - Pay is tragically low for both the position and the industry.
    - The work becomes dreadfully boring and cyclical after about 2 quarters
    - The department is clearly being downsized due to automation though management is not transparent about it
    - The expectations for career advancement are not only moving targets, but they are undisclosed as well
    - Employee engagement is at a level where even the management team listens to music while they work
    - The department budget is completely secret, but must be shrinking because benefits such as sponsored book clubs and happy hours are long gone
    - All of these contribute to the unusually high turnover rate

    Advice to Management

    - When you do not have any transparency about the budget, but benefits disappear and people are laid off, people notice. Just because no one is telling you, does not mean they don't see what's going on
    - If people are laid off and remaining employees now have additional work to do, it may be a prudent time to show employees that you value them
    - We are a back office of a satellite office in a place with brutally hot summers, why do we need to wear business casual?
    - This is a textbook role for working remotely, which you may consider taking advantage of as a a low cost benefit
    - The high turnover means that it is easy to lose a sense of culture, perhaps help new hires integrate culturally in addition to learning about core work.

I have been working at Cambridge Associates, LLC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone around you is a young professional

    Cons

Low pay. No encouragement towards innovation and risk taking. Promotions work off of how long you've worked at the firm more than the actual work that you produce for the team. Management is very young so may not always know how to run a team effectively and efficiently. Little flexibility in terms of dress code and working hours. Lastly, zero support for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

If salaries aren't going to increase, employees should at least get more flexibility with their schedules on top of other types of incentives that do not involve money. Also, a lot of employees would appreciate it if management reduced their micromanagement style.

    Pros

Work-life balance is a positive. Plenty of resources and opportunity available to you, but you will need to reach out and take them. Movement within the company is common if you find another business line that interests you more.

    Cons

Progression is very much "track" oriented.

    Pros

-Management is incredibly supportive of their employees.
-Close bonds are forged between employees and management.
-D&R has an entrepreneurial spirit that contradicts what you might expect from a large financial institution.
-There are always opportunities to get involved. Inspires personal and professional growth by empowering employees to decide when and how they want to get involved in these opportunities and make valuable contributions.
-Open lines of communication between management and their employees--they want to know how to best serve you as their employee and help them develop.
-Opportunities to interact with a number of different groups within the firm from within D&R.
-Although the career trajectory in PRG levels off at Senior Analyst, there are opportunities to move into a new role within Cambridge, and management is supportive of helping you as the employee find your niche (both while working in D&R and when starting to think about moving outside of the group).
-Opportunity to work on complex client relationships, hone strong relationship building, communication, and organizational skills.
    -Incredible flexibility and great benefits.
-Instrumental in developing core professional skills.

    Cons

This isn't a con as much as a comment and piece of advice:

-If you allow yourself to get bored or discouraged, the core work at times can be boring and discouraging. There are many opportunities available to employees of all tenure levels to pursue to mitigate the feelings that may arise for some employees as a function of the cyclical nature of the core work. Get involved in these opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Even though it's important to be cohesive as a management team, work towards your strengths! If one manager's preference is more towards projects, help them manage people who are most interested in projects so that they can collaborate and learn from one another. If another manager's preference is people, allow them to manage the people centered projects. The management team already does a good job of doing this, but I think it's important to keep it in mind so that management can continue feeling valuable and employees can continue to grow.

    Pros

Great place to start your career.
Amazing co-workers and I love my manager. They have become my best friends.
Lots of opportunity to get involved in other teams than your core work
No overtime if you don't want to do it and are clear with your manager.

    Cons

    -No room for growth
    -No room for creativity
    -Core work is boring
    - VERY outdated technology

    Advice to Management

    Invest in technology.

I have been working at Cambridge Associates, LLC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cambridge is the top institutional investment advisor in the US (and possible the world), that name recognition it itself is priceless. But the firm is really focused on employee development and engagement as well which makes for a great combination.

    Cons

The position of performance reporting can be a bit repetitive, but the exit opportunities that come from the job make up for this. Most people go on to work for a top investment firm or go to a top 20 MBA.

    Advice to Management

Higher salary for entry level, salary becomes competitive after first promotion at 6 months. But those first 6 months can be disappointing when it comes to salary. Although, overtime is a nice pro when it comes to salary.

Not a lot of room for vertical growth after 3 or 4 years. Not a lot of transferrable skills.
