I worked at Cambridge University Hospitals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hundreds of great, genuinely good-willed people all over the hospital. Awesome community spirit and high-quality patient care.

    Cons

Senior management and directorate are self-centered. Not enough money is spent on front-line staff.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring Transformation managers and spend your money on front-line nursing staff.

I have been working at Cambridge University Hospitals part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is always work available, there is almost always overtime present and also there is never a shortage of opportunities to work in many departments, it can be rewarding to directly make a difference to people's lives

    Cons

The pay does not increase with inflation, a few years ago, it increased by 1% and then it has not since. Managerial roles are filled for a long time so it is hard to progress past band 5 if you are not a midwife or doctor. Staff are often overworked, due to lack of funding for appropriate staff levels, this is not helped by staff being hindered in their role by endless paperwork that badly needs streamlining

    Advice to Management

Work to increase the pay for bands 2-5, work to reduce the amount of paperwork in every little process in order to focus more on patients and also show the staff more appreciation directly

  5. "Great hospital, poor management"

    StarStarStarStarStar

    Pros

The strength in the hospital lies with the staff. Generally you have a group of hard working, dedicated staff who genuinely care for the patients, across all levels of disciplinary. I cannot stress this enough!

New IT software put into place is settling in very nicely now.

    Cons

Current financial pressures placed on the entire NHS are reflected here in full force. Lack of bed capacity, lack of decent equipment, reduction in (the already slim) benefits for staff.

Site expansion without much forethought for the impact it will have on commuting.

    Advice to Management

I believe the disconnection from upper management has improved, still a long way to go. I do think we are doing the best we can under current pressures.

I worked at Cambridge University Hospitals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hundreds of hard-working nurses, doctors and other medical professionals, all willing to get involved in making the hospital a better place to work.

    Cons

Crippling bureaucracy, ill-informed management and director ego-stroking makes getting anything worthwhile done at CUH near to impossible.

    Advice to Management

Spend less money on yourselves, and more money on the front line.

I worked at Cambridge University Hospitals (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent place for trainees. Medicine is very advanced. Research is encouraged.
Generally interesting and intelligent colleagues. Career opportunities are good, partly due to high turnover.

    Cons

Staff morale is low due to the bad press and to the way management treats its employees. The hospital is too big to have a personal feel and so each department is dependent on its local management for its culture and quality of employee treatment. Doctors are very powerful and don't all behave well to junior staff.
Cambridge is an expensive place to live but there is no London weighting.

    Advice to Management

A hospital is only as good as its staff and more effort should be made to ensure that morale stays high at all levels and across all disciplines. In some cases local departmental management is poor and more focus could be made on supporting this group to ensure they treat their employees fairly to avoid high turnover rates.

    Pros

Nandos Discount and other various discounts around the place.
You are doing something good for the world by working for the NHS

    Cons

Many different rules and some of them lack common sense
    too many managers
there is little opportunity for positive feedback and the message from management is relentlessly negative
Little in the way of actual company benefits

    Advice to Management

Cheer up and thank staff more often, rather than always taking a glass half empty approach. We are aware there are money problems, you don't have to constantly remind us!
