I have been working at Camden County College part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most supervisors are good. Easy to leave work at work and enjoy life during time off.

    Cons

Hard to move around once hired. The supervisors that aren't good are absolutely horrible people to work for.

I have been working at Camden County College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Autonomy with developing coursework and good student engagement, depending on the subject. Most students are eager to learn and many are hard-workers. The population includes many older students who have returned to college after many years and many international students who value education. If you are teaching an intensive subject such as English, you can really make a difference in the students' abilities to communicate well. All must pass a departmental exam and skills do rise considerably. A master's degree is required to teach at this level, although substantial experience can be substituted in some disciplines. The campus is quite nice and the facilities are very modern in many aspects. The affiliation with Rutgers has also improved campus environment. Large congregating areas in student center, a lot of open space and green areas where students play ball or frisbee, and a dedicated student services building make the college feel more like a community.

    Cons

The pay is far less than at a 4-year university and there is no office space for adjuncts to hold office hours. Classes can be cancelled at the last minute due to low enrollment. Enrollment is down and some have been laid off as the college restructures. Tenured professors can be burnt out and there is a strong bias against the lowly adjunct ---- even though adjuncts are doing all the heavy lifting. This can create two kinds of adjuncts: those who are there to really teach and who put in all the time and effort that takes, and those who do the bear minimum for students, and who run from job to job due to the low pay.

    Advice to Management

Provide the adjuncts with a professional pay scale and much more respect.

I worked at Camden County College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent compensation plan. You pay into the state pension plan, and you get free education as a college employee. Paid holidays off.

    Cons

Most of your colleagues are there because they're married to someone, related to someone, a child of someone, or fellating someone who works for the college or the county, meaning they can do whatever they please and face little to no repercussions.

    Advice to Management

Enact some ethics and stop with the nepotism and cronyism.

Stop hiring minorities, just because they're minorities and you need to meet a quota.
