I have been working at Camp Augusta full-time for more than a year

    Pros

What I love most about Camp Augusta is the spirit of community. Being welcomed onto the staff at camp is like being welcomed into a family. Like family, Augusta is both supportive and challenging. Working here will push you to be a better version fo yourself every day. Sometimes that push will feel harsh and sometimes the movement towards growth will feel messy, but camp family will always be there rooting for you to...

    Cons

Like the other reviews mention, personal space and time can be hard to come by at camp... the flipside of living in community. For introverts, it can be a challenge to find time to refuel alone. In the summer, the bustle of camp can also feel overwhelming at times.

I worked at Camp Augusta full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Takes great care of campers and does its best to make sure they are safe and have an amazing time.

    Cons

Cult like culture. I was a director at Camp Augusta. They treat their staff like batteries in the Matrix. Be amazing on our terms or we will remove your ability to learn here.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Camp Augusta full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Camp Augusta provides many of the benefits that other camps provide - community, work with children, growth opportunities, skill-building and sheer fun. It also provides a lot of personal and career development work that is worth an incredible amount. The organization has latitude to focus on not only training its staff to be great counselors for children, but also to train them in fairly advanced communication, therapeutic,...

    Cons

Augusta expects an enormous amount from its staff, and seeks out people who have high standards for themselves in order to fit that mold. The environment can be fast-paced, staff often don't have the time or space to center themselves as we do in 'normal' jobs, and while suggestions and improvements are highly valued, it is sometimes difficult to find approval or appreciation, pushing staff to find validation and valuation...

I have been working at Camp Augusta for more than 10 years

    Pros

Camp Augusta isn't a walk in the park - you are invited to truly participate as a community member. You will share your expertise, you will learn new skills, and ways of being. You will never see work the same way again, and you will love what you do. Each night you'll sleep better than you ever had, and when campers leave your heart will break. Not even in school or college are you offered the opportunity to learn how...

    Cons

Nowhere is perfect, and the pro of this con is that Augusta recognizes it's failings and involves the community in finding resolution. Working here is tiring, checking out is very difficult, and you'll need to take responsibility for asking for what you need. At most, you'll get an hour off a day during summer camp, and you'll use that time to do other camp-related tasks (or laundry). If you need more than 9 hours sleep...

    Advice to Management

Consider further avenues for staff to really understand the summer ahead of them - more staff experiences through video. Or maybe a modern pen-pal idea where a newly higher staff member is paired up with a non-hiring staff member (old or new) who can share their direct experiences

    I worked at Camp Augusta

    Pros

Camp never stops becoming. It is unusual like that, different from almost any other place I have been. It is continuously transforming. I credit this movement to the tireless efforts of its staff and the inspired guidance of its director. Every year I have worked at Camp I have left filled with awe. I am in awe of Camp, and myself, and everything I get to be a part of. Camp is a very special place. As special as my heart....

    Cons

Its con same as its pro. Camp transforms and so must the people who work there. Good enough and getting by won't do. Augustans are tasked to innovate, to aim high, to succeed and fail (those imposters). It is hard work, the hardest I have ever worked in a summer. I could tell you it is worth it, every drop, even (especially) the bits I liked least, but what would be the good in that? And what fun? You will have to discover...

    I worked at Camp Augusta

    Pros

This is a place to learn. As part of the summer counseling staff, I received training in communication, leadership, organizational knowledge management and behavior guidance, as well as being introduced to many philosophies that have helped me to become a more peaceful, more intentional, more satisfied human being. I continue to look to things I learned here both in my work with children and in my personal relationships....

    Cons

Camp can be an intense environment. There is very little personal "down time," you will be called on to continue to look within and seek out paths for growth - which often comes with its sorrows and discomforts - and the decision making model of reaching a whole community consensus isn't always quick, nor perfectly executed. Patience, humility and curiosity are necessary traits for an enjoyable and enlivening work environment.

I worked at Camp Augusta full-time

    Pros

Wonderful training program, diverse and passionate staff, beautiful facilities. Worked in the kitchen and as a children's activities instructor. The food was wonderful and organic.

    Cons

Low pay, long hours, intense work demand, and not much free time. The flat-hierarchy and consensus driven policies of the camp make policy changes and decisions very time consuming and frustrating. High turnover rate of employees due to intense work demands and low pay.

    Advice to Management

The organization's values emphasizes the development and care of employees, however past policies and decisions regarding certain employees do not reflect these values.

I worked at Camp Augusta for more than a year

    Pros

The skills and experiences that you learn there are fantastic and worth their weight in gold. In the first year, I loved the environment and was empowered by change and development I could lend to help the camp grow. The food is fantastic.

    Cons

Living arrangements for upper-level staff is not great and politics over policies run who should get what housing. Next to no real time off for any position. Policies aren't followed. Claimed to be a flat-hierarchy but far from it. Doesn't matter how many years you have worked there or what sort of work you did for the organization. When you do want to leave, they take personal offense. Be wary of administration.

    Advice to Management

Come out of the woods for a bit and realize that there is more outside of the world of camp. Personal growth can mean many things. Build more housing for full-time staff. Look out for your staff and not your bottom line.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Camp Augusta for less than a year

    Pros

Inspired to provide a unique, life-changing experience to campers. Community filled with positive intentions, clean communication, consensus decision making, flat hierarchy, and healthy nourishment. Meet friends from around the world. Learn about non-violent communication, neuro-linguistic programming, and success counseling.

    Cons

Non-stop hard work with very limited time off; takes a lot of energy and creativity. Communal living; live and work in same space, around same people 24/7 for multiple months (could be a pro if you love the people, and most do!). Limited electricity and virtually no technology (also a pro). Some of the community agreements are complex and take a while to get used to.
