I worked at Camp Bow Wow part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The schedule is flexible as a dogwalker and you work with animal 80% of the time.

    Cons

The camp side of the job was horrible the employees were not friendly and most of all the owner Laurie williams was a horrible boss. She acted like a child and talked about everyone behind their back. Very unprofessional and especially rude to the clients. Mainly the rudeness to the clients will be her downfall since many decided to leave her service for former employees who started stealing her clients and are currently opening their owner company with her customers.

    Advice to Management

My advice would to actually follow through with the no compete terms and to keep Laurie out of reach of the customers. If your unable to treat clients well then do not be the one to serve them. Also open the opportunities to advance to the people who actually deserve it not the ones who are able to flatter you to heaven and back that doesn't qualify them.

I have been working at Camp Bow Wow full-time

    Pros

A great group of dog loving people that will do whatever it takes to be successful for corporate, the franchisees and the community. The pet industry is growing fast and furious, so the opportunities are endless as a Camp Bow Wow employee. As compared to most franchisors being owned by private equity groups (where the company is demolished to bare bones and then sold off for a large profit), VCA owns Camp Bow Wow and the support is great. A very flexible work schedule and it's always great to work with dogs in the office.

    Cons

As with any organization, communication can be a challenge, however is moving in the right direction to collaborate.

    Advice to Management

Remain transparent, and continue to lead by example.

I have been working at Camp Bow Wow full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility in scheduling for staff. Great part time job for people in college. Excellent benefits through parent company VCA. The executive team really care about their employees.

    Cons

Most people want to work at Camp Bow Wow for the benefit of playing with dogs all day. It quickly becomes apparent that this job is a lot of hard work, a lot of cleaning, and spending much of the shift standing and walking out in the elements.

    Advice to Management

No advice. Keep doing what you are doing. This company is heading in such a great direction and is the industry leader for a reason - true innovators, experts in dog care and one of the best franchise models around.

I worked at Camp Bow Wow part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Spend time with the dogs, great coworkers and clients, bring your dogs to work (not every location allows this)

    Cons

Consistently understaffed and hectic, very loud work environment, extremely busy around major holidays

    Advice to Management

    Don't understaff!

I have been working at Camp Bow Wow full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great vet discount program. Discounts at Corp. locations. Casual dress. Can bring your dog(s) to work. 10 Paid days off a year. Snow/work from home days. New hires are paid fairly. The leader is good for the franchise system.

    Cons

The leadership in the office has gotten steadily worse over the last two years. The culture used to be like a second family and it took some time, but the new leadership has slowly killed the culture along with HR, who is in the leadership's pocket and is not trusted by anyone on the team. You get ahead when there is lots of ego-stroking and okey-dookey'ing going on. There are definite "favorites" that get away with everything. There is a new tension that is present that is only growing stronger each day. There used to be quarterly bonuses for everyone that meets their goals, but those are no longer happening, yet the leaders get them and won't push for the rest of the team to get them. The communication is terrible. The "forced fun" is uncomfortable. The tension is palpable. The future for the team is questionable at best. Lots of the team are actively looking for other employment. The leadership is a nightmare for the team.

    Advice to Management

    Why....it is not heard anyway?!

I have been working at Camp Bow Wow part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Dogs! Lots of dogs with their own quirky personalities! Some of the employees rock!

    Cons

Management. Hiring from outside the company is more common than promoting from within and in a care based business hiring someone to lead a team without any knowledge of how things go is a little ridiculous.

There is very little organization among the ranks and if anything at all goes wrong blame is often placed on staff members that were uninvolved with whatever happened.

The pay is terrible, you will make more in a fast food restaurant than here.

Stress. You will be stressed. All the time.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to train new hires well and to offer incentive for the good employees to stay. No one wants to work their butt off for nothing.

I have been working at Camp Bow Wow full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work with dogs everyday!
    Pay is decent
    Very clean establishment
Everyone who works there really cares about the dogs!
    Very active job
    Great hours
    Friendly staff
Very well organized camp bow wow

    Cons

None because I love my job and truly believe in this amazing company! I guess the only con would be early mornings and cleaning up dog messes, but hey that's all part of the job when your working in the animal care field!

    Advice to Management

The new camp director is absolutely fabulous. She is extremely professional and has amazing work ethics! I'm very pleased she has taken over as camp director!
