I have been working at Canada Revenue Agency full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    1. Amazing work-life balance 2. Great teammates 3. Everyone values your ideas and opinions even if you're new in a team 4. Flexible hours and opportunities to work from home as and when necessary 5. Better vacation, decent pay and benefits compared to most other govt. and private organizations in North America 6. Lot of opportunities to move around and find new things to work on 7. Extended vacation leave (without pay or with income averaging) is possible depending on the team and the type of position 8. You're given enough time to adapt to new responsibilities 9. If you are honest with your work and are really good at what you do, you will get promoted as long as you meet the minimum required experience and skill criteria, even if more senior people apply for the same position (no, it's not a myth) 10. Great union that knows how to properly do collective bargaining.

    Cons

    1. Some dev teams with bi-annual releases and lots of maintenance work (bug fixes, data mart maintenance etc.) will ask you to take short vacations even if you haven't taken a vacation for a long time, say almost a year. 2. Some teams don't have good succession planning processes. 3. Being Agile is not everyone's cup of tea. Even if you work in an Agile team, your stakeholders might be using waterfall method to do software development and slow you down for no reason. 4. Bureaucracy - lots of paperwork and many layers of approval even to get the simplest type of accesses 5. Senior management is averse to taking risks and doing experiments, although this culture is slowly changing. However, these are just minor inconveniences given the pros above.
