    Cons

    Horrible shifts
    Incompetent leadership
No opportunity to leave union and become management if so desired

Do your job effectively and efficiently, then you won't have to be so uptight all the time hoping subordinates and colleagues squared your work away when YOUR BOSS comes looking for YOU.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Canadian National Railway (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay was excellent better than industry standards. When seniority was handled properly choice road jobs could be had without any issue.

    Cons

The worst management structure ever was in place at the CN if wasn't management driven it wasn't going to fly. The only real issue with working out of Memphis was the terrible Superintendent.

    Advice to Management

Inorder to see a wonderful product come to the market place and thrive wonderful employees make things happen for the brand. The brand compensates but doesn't satisfy the employee...The CN has it backwards.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Prett laid back and easy going interview. Asks about your current and past employment. Who you know on the railroad.

    Cons

Doesn't seem too organized as a class was supposed to start within 2 weeks of the interview and then after following up I was told the class wasn't starting for about a month or two. No straight answers given at all. (Track Maintainer)

    Advice to Management

Get some things a little more organized so people can figure it out.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits! Never a fear of checks not posting to bank account or company going bankrupt any time soon.

    Cons

If you want a ballance between family life and home life, look somewhere else! Very few employees have a family ballance and are expected to live for their job! Very volatile work environment at times.

    Advice to Management

I work in management and work 13+ hours a day, sometimes for weeks without days off. Employees leave at an alarming rate and will continue to.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The job is good, the people you work with are mostly hard working people supporting families. The pay is very good.

    Cons

You don't see you're family for extended amounts of time, the phone rings and you have to report to work in 2 hours.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employee's with respect and dignity. Happy employees tend to work harder, than the not happy employees. It all comes down to how you approach people. Respect works in both directions.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay, assigned off days on extra board. Five on two off one week six on one off next week.

    Cons

Constant fear of being pulled out of service for minor infractions, whether you're a new hire or an old head. Too strict of a layoff policy, can only lay off three days in a twelve week period. Doctors excuses are not accepted. Any day of being marked off is counted as an unexcused absence. Stressful place to work. Quality of life poor.

    Advice to Management

Rely more and listen more to the people that have been there a long time. Further mentor and guide the younger guys, not look for ways to pull them out of service.
