I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent Pay, Good technology, steady work. Lot's of chances for advancement if willing to relocate. People actually doing the work are great to work with and hard working.

    Cons

Front line supervisors are micro managed causing them to micro manage employees. Every day seems like a witch hunt to find failures of rules. No concern for anyone's personal family life, railroad first ! Unobtainable deadlines and goals.

    Advice to Management

Let your people do their jobs and you would be surprised of the outcome !!!

    Pros

Great people, good benifits, awesome pay, the retirement is outstanding. Very good advancement opportunities if thats what you want. All in alll its a great career.

    Cons

The different schedules and hour you work. It's not like any other job. Its a life style. The fact that when they train you to become a great employee, they work harder at trying to fire you over the littlest things.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay, Insurance. Getting to know other railroaders, comraderie. Working outside can be great during the right times of year. Pay

    Cons

Management style. Type of people they promote to management. Using scare tactics instead of coaching properly.

    Advice to Management

throw away the current system and start over. Hire people who can motivate others instead of using scare tactics because honestly we're grown men and women. We're not scared of you, you just irritate us.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits! Never a fear of checks not posting to bank account or company going bankrupt any time soon.

    Cons

If you want a ballance between family life and home life, look somewhere else! Very few employees have a family ballance and are expected to live for their job! Very volatile work environment at times.

    Advice to Management

I work in management and work 13+ hours a day, sometimes for weeks without days off. Employees leave at an alarming rate and will continue to.

I have been working at Canadian National Railway full-time

    Pros

Great experiences, travel, working with good people, great pay, great benefits, excellent railroad experience

    Cons

Poor management, long hours, doing "favors" for management who will turn around and fire you with no recollection of all of the hard, extra work you did to make them look good so they can collect their bonus.

    Advice to Management

Quit calling me on my day off. No, I'm not coming in, and no I won't ever come in on my day off. Every time you come in, there's a risk you might get fired.
