I worked at Canadian Tire full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great franchise owner relations, upper management, department manager. Good working conditions, great scheduling.

    Cons

Loss of automotive technicians lead to a slowdown, slow recovery. One bad service advisor created a toxic work environment.

    Advice to Management

Terminate the toxic employee. All the staff resent being talked-down to, verbally abused and berated by this service advisor. Customers walked-out because of her.

I worked at Canadian Tire full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great Company overall, lots of excitement with respect to the future of retail. Corporate employees are generally well compensated, and with good bonuses.

    Cons

The Company is starting to loose it's commitment to integrity and ethical behaviour. It's not rampant, but if you look closely, you can see it in the decisions that senor leaders are making, and the way they are treating their staff. Management is starting to slide down the slippery slope of putting their careers, and the companies bottom line above all else. They used to believe that if you take care of your employees, they'll take care of your business. The Company will use up your energy, your ideas, you'll give a lot, and as long as you keep giving its all good. If you falter do to sickness or mental health issues, you'll be tossed aside.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect. If you're going to demand a lot from them, then make sure you reciprocate by caring for them in difficult times. You'll earn their respect and their undying gratitude, and you might find your engagement scores rising. Make sure your leaders are actually good at leading, and not just good at bullying employees to get the work done. Finally, invest in your employees and in leadership training. Everyone who gives you their time and energy and believes in the Company deserves something in return, and not just a paycheck. They deserve the opportunity to do their best work.
