    I worked at Canary full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    Great coworkers. Before 2018, this company still had lots of employees and great coworkers. The office was great and lunch was provided.

    Cons

    Many of the employees had left and the office is not as great. For a hardware company, it lacks too many key positions to enable development. Poor product decisions were made that critically affected the customers. Canary had to make decisions to recover from the poor financial management, now it has to make decisions to recover from becoming irrelevant in the market.

    Advice to Management

    Hold your exit interviews, nowadays you don't even do that. Things said here as advice to management would break confidentiality agreement.

    Pros

    Back in 2015- 2016, the team was incredible. Canary was the first smart camera product to hit the market. Amazing times at the company, very optimistic about the outlook.

    Cons

    From there on, the company went downhill. Instead of focusing on the end user and letting product/tech drive, the focus was on the CEO's vision. Except, parts of the vision that were realized did not yield expected results, so priorities were constantly changing and that resulted in a lot of frustration, missed deadlines and barely any movement forward.     I worked at Canary

    Pros

    Salary and benefits at Canary were pretty great. People were initially super enthusiastic about the product and mission. Office in Chelsea was fantastic as well.

    Cons

    Company culture quickly became pretty political and team managers did a poor job of running their teams. There wasn’t much HR with regards to the gender bias and sexism in the company either.

    Hold people accountable.

    Talented engineers to work with.

    Employees are expected to wield their magic wand everyday while management spends their time in meetings that literally go no where. Every day there's a new idea that's thrown around and the next day its thrown out. Too many lies are told to the employees, it's gotten to a point where no one cares about the all team meeting anymore. Its a one way street between employees and the management. Every one left at...

    Advice to Management

    People can still see you if you close your eyes. I suggest you get rid of the all team meetings instead of getting everyone together just to lie to them. Culture isn't taking a hit because people are working from home, it is because no one trusts you or the company anymore.

    Pros

    Friendly work space, catered lunch, bagel Fridays, beer on tap in the office, and a keg of cold brew. I worked on very interesting projects and spent time with great people.

    Cons

    During my time there I didn't notice anything that bothered me.

    Promising technology. Promising engineers that could innovate. Strong and genuine friendships.

    Lacked a vision to deliver on. Didn't keep up. Horrible management. Hemorrhaging great talent.

    I worked at Canary

    Pros

    Higher up's are nice guys, bright and talented. Decent product in a rapidly growing industry. Good pay. Nice office space in NYC.

    Cons

    Trying to do too much, too fast. A delayed product launch screwed the entire company over and they had to let a bunch of people go. Things changed pretty drastically when new CMO came on. Good guy, but somewhere along the way, the company lost itself. Communication is very bad between departments, and management can be kind of secretive and shady. Don't keep your employees in the dark.

    Re-evaluate your priorities and company mission. Get back to that start-up vibe where everyone was a team and passionate about Canary.

      People below management level are smart and great to work with.

      Had to write after seeing some recent generic positive reviews. The company is not doing well, but the scariest part is the level of dishonesty. It's not just omission, it's dishonesty about the financial state, employee roles and other changes being made that are changing entire vibe of product and company (bye bye customer experience/relationships and innovation).
