I worked at Canon U.S.A. full-time for more than 9 years

      Pros

Major player in the market, cash firm organization in an industry mired by financial issues.

      Cons

No real growth opportunities. Decisions are handed down from Japan and not drawn on from the experience of the people in the US or field. Management run in a very clique sort of fashion

I worked at Canon U.S.A. full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Decent benefits, good amount of paid time off, nice campus with walking trail. They will close on snowy days.

      Cons

Canon disrespects their employees, treating them like misbehaving children. They are hung up on punctuality, actually calling people out for being 8 seconds late. I was reprimanded once for leaving at 4:58 on a Friday. Never mind if you come in early, stay late, or take a short lunch, they don't care. Flextime is not allowed, nor is working from home. I was laid off recently during a 'reorg.' We were each brought down...

I have been working at Canon U.S.A. full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Astute brand name - an industry leader. Excellent camaraderie. Good benefits, 401k with matching, and time off. Company culture. Reasonable commute. Decent compensation. Recognition and Reward.

      Cons

Limited upward mobility. Top heavy with management, senior management and Directors. Work-life imbalance in several departments with excessive evening and potential weekend hours every month, quarter, mid-year and year end sales close.

      Advice to Management

Less middle and upper management gives the "working class" more of an opportunity. Metrics based raises are insulting.

I have been working at Canon U.S.A. full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Strong reputation A lot of established processes and highly structured environment Comfortable working environment especially at the headquarters - featuring a cafeteria with many options, walking trails, and a fitness center

      Cons

Business is not doing well - there have been layoffs recently No flexibility Salary increases are not very high from year to year Promotions do not happen often here so many younger people stay for a couple of years and then leave for growth opportunities

      Advice to Management

Be more open to the American culture and way of doing business. While the Japanese culture is very respectable, it is proving to not be sustainable here.

I have been working at Canon U.S.A. full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

9 to 5 work hours Standard vacation time off Great facility A brand that had a great reputation

      Cons

You are a gofer to the Expats. A Company that functions like a class system. Opinions and suggestions not wanted, all decisions come from Canon JPN HQ. Constant restructuring and movement of American staff. Following other market leaders is the plan. No communication from VPs and above, you are expected to treat them as if they were gods.

      Advice to Management

If you say employees are the best assets, treat all employees with respect not just the J staff. There is no I in Team, accomplishments are not just made by your leaders.
