I have been working at Canon USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you are just starting out in your career or you are well established and are in your late 40's to 50's then this company is for you. If you have a young family or young kids...then run away and don't look back Let me elaborate.

Canon right now is a great growth company. They are well established in many different markets and are really growing strong. If you want stability, strength, little to no layoffs, then Canon is for you. The benefits are pretty good (not the best, not the worst) and you can be happy working a 35 hour work week.

You will contribute in some way to making Canon even greater, which will feel very good if you are very young or a little older. However, let's get to the most important con: there is NO work/life balance whatsoever.

    Cons

Let me be clear. The rumors that you heard are true. Canon Melville is a true 9-5 job, however, if you don't buzz your badge in by 8:59AM then you are considered late and go on a list. Two lateness in a month and you'll be put on some sort of administrative probation. If you are stuck in traffic...better hope you have a nice boss you can text or call to put up an hour of PTO for you. You might as well stop for an egg sandwich and coffee, because you just lost an hour of PTO.

You cannot badge out before 5PM either. If you do, you'll go on a list. Your boss must reconcile that list week to week with your planned PTO approvals and such. It is truly ridiculous.

There is no working from home, no work/life balance, and very little can be done from home anyhow. Canon's computer system infrastructure is not only living in the dark ages of the early 2000's but it is so locked down due to fear of stealing trade secrets that doing any work outside the office is near impossible.

If you are not lucky enough to get a laptop (I was not) you are given iPads instead. You can check email on the fly. Big deal.

At 5PM, everyone bolts for the door. You can imagine what the parking lot, the LIE and Walt-Whitman Road are like at that time. Don’t even bother!!
What starts as a 9-5 job really turns into an 8:30 to 5:30 if you want to A) ensure you are never late and B) want to leave the parking lot without waiting in line 20 minutes.

Canon has no free coffee. NO free coffee. There is Starbucks and some other brand available in the café for a price.
For breakfast, the café closes immediately at 9AM. Again, plan on being there by 8:30AM. There are designated lunch times. The lunch room can’t hold every employee either, so don’t even try to find seating. Does this sound like a prison yet?

Let me clear again. If you are just starting out or late in your career then these ‘cons’ may appear like ‘pros’ to you. A stable company with a strict dress code where everyone pulls their share. It can be a nice atmosphere but I don’t really feel it. People are out the door by 5:01PM since you make them feel like a prisoner.

    Advice to Management

Allow people to choose their working hours. If you allow people to come in 8:30 to 4:30, and some to do the 9-5 and some 9:30 to 5:30, you make people feel less like prisoners and more in control of their lives. In addition, you will lose the panic from people to get to their cars at 5:01PM and exit before the line gets long. Traffic will improve. Morale will improve. Life will improve.

Put a Keurig machine in each pantry...wouldn't kill you!

I have been working at Canon USA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

New Building, Benefits are OK. Salary is not that great. At orientation, they really try to teach you about each dept in the company and how you're job impacts everything else in the company. A lot of people have been at Canon for 10+ years, but there is a good mix of employees of varying ages.

    Cons

Very strict 9-5, no flexibility in hours at all and no overtime. Open layout set up. Supervisor cubicles are behind associates and it feels like they're looking over your shoulder all the time. No sense of career advancement. Since everyone works 9-5, of you don't leave at 5 sharp, you'll be on a long line for about 30 minutes before you get to the main road.

    Advice to Management

Better training for new employees so they aren't lost. Hiring more people would help too.

The salaries are on the low side

    Advice to Management

If you want to keep your solid employees, you need to pay them better.

I have been working at Canon USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great overall company, with excellent benefits (time off, insurance, etc.)

    Cons

Challenging culture - culture requires consensus for decisions, changes, etc. Significant amount of time is spent going in a circle. At best, the timeline for projects, changes, etc is significantly longer than it needs to be. In some instances, the change just never happens. People don't often leave the organization, so there are individuals that are not performing at an optimal level, which are there for years (despite lack of performance). Opportunity for growth is limited. People that desire to make change happen and are used to moving quickly are likely to struggle here.

I worked at Canon USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits and vacation time

    Cons

Oh man. This isn't the place for you if you want to actually move up in a company. Any strides toward growth and opportunity are almost a waste of time. It was a great place if you're right out of college and don't know any better. Turnaround for the 25-40 age group was very high.

    Advice to Management

Give some incentive to go to work every day. Provide comprehensive training that relates to the actual job. Allow your employees to grow and encourage them to do so. Trust your employees to know what's best for a client, especially if they have more experience with that client than you do
