I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Freedom and flexibility to balance work and life, as well as to take ownership of your career. My leadership is incredibly passionate about making sure each of our associates are doing work that is truly fulfilling and inspiring. Never have I felt limited by hierarchy, role, team, etc. My opinion feels valued and I have many ways to voice it. I love that I can take an idea and run with it, without needing layers upon layers of approval. The pay and benefits are fantastic.

    Cons

We've made improvements (and continue to make improvements), by leaps and bounds, but sometimes process slows down delivery of work.

    Advice to Management

I haven't had any issues with my leadership.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Although the company has its flaws, this company is the most meritocratic company that I have ever worked in. Also, the benefits are generous and the work-life balance is nice too!

    Cons

Most managers lack really basic technical skills

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very flexible, fast moving, competitive, good pay and benefits, the West Creek campus in VA is a great location with everything you need

    Cons

Constant fear of layoff if you are not a newer project team, performance management process is terrible and destroys morale for everyone

    Advice to Management

Be more inconclusive with teams not building the hot new project

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of opportunity if you are a self starter.

    Cons

There are sometimes almost constant reorgs. This can make it tough to build deep relationships with your management chain, but can give you a broader exposure.

    Advice to Management

Try to reduce the number of reorgs if possible. It's disruptive and can have negative impacts for performance management (promotions)

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a very energetic environment. I really feel like I'm making a contribution, and given the company culture, I imagine most people feel the same way.

    Cons

Annual percentage raises are pretty small compared to where I worked previously.

    Advice to Management

.Ensure middle management associates have clear value and contribution.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great fringe benefits, like most of the people I work with. Nice working environment at West Creek campus. Lots of on-site choices for lunch.

    Cons

Annual layoffs/reorgs causing unnecessary stress. Politics/connections is the #1 factor for career success (guess this is true for most companies).

    Advice to Management

The managers I've reported to did a great job. My advice would be to the upper manager which I don't interact with. Please reduce the frequency of the reorgs and it would be nice if technical skills were recognized/valued (a lot of the best technical people are leaving for other opportunities).

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good work-life balance. Depends on your team, but I have 35-45 hour weeks and work at home whenever I feel like it.
    - Decent pay. Perhaps not the highest around, but you're well compensated for the amount of effort you put in. Richmond-based people can live like kings. Excellent 401k match.
    - Smart and friendly people. The culture is pretty open - but see cons.
    - Good cafeteria in McLean. Richmond's is worse.
    - Very focused on development. Tech/finance skills are weighted equally with presentation/influence skills and you are strongly encouraged to work on these through practice and classes.

    Cons

    - Capital One is trying hard to become a tech company but not much is changing. Buzzwords abound but few understand what they mean (and they keep leaving). Some people work on innovative side projects, but the core work stays the same.
    - Too many highly qualified people are stuck doing monotonous work.
    - People can be too nice. Reluctance to openly criticize or flat-out reject a doomed project results in wasted time.
    - Promotion/rating process is very secretive and results are sometimes surprising.

    Advice to Management

Talking the talk will not transform Capital One into a leading tech company. Get serious about making sure everyone - including business/finance teams - is bought in. Stop promoting analysts who don't want to be a part of it, or else they will drive away the analysts who do.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great culture, good pay, good work life balance, for those that are willing to go the extra mile, there can be good rewards, easy to move around to other jobs within Cap One

    Cons

Some roles are not very analytical, but since its easy to move around, cant really consider it a major drawback. If you don't like your job role, network and find another role which is more interesting.
