I worked at Capital One full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great culture
    Fun work environment
Laid back atmosphere - can be casual
Frequent team outings and happy hours
    Annual winter galas
    Annual summer picnics
    Amazing benefits

    Cons

Personally, I had some issues with moving departments. My manager and I would discuss potential moves, and he would be supportive, but then would block opportunities. I ended up leaving because of this.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fantastic team members, opportunity to network, ability to learn financial services, robust training program, phenomenal mentors

    Cons

Limited career growth in MN, it can be increasingly difficult to find a role that is fulfilling over time since it's not a destination site

    Pros

Great benefits and opportunities, great fantastic campus

    Cons

Not always team driven, one just watch to ensure the are seen and market themself.

    Advice to Management

Focus on how we got here and look for long term results

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Tech group is pointed in the right direction. Hiring in the San Francisco offices has helped the entire tech group do better. Benefits and lifestyle are unmatched. Great live/work balance. Big long term upsides, and clear path for "Individual Contributers" (i.e. non-people managing programmers) all they way up to Vice President level.

    Cons

Big company still working through multiple integrations with acquired banks and other companies. Big company politics.

    Advice to Management

Keep driving best practice technologies. Do what Rich Fairbanks says (don't just repeat it). Listen to technology people.

I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

    Work life balance
    Interesting work in fintech
    Occasional travel
    Vacation and 401k is great

    Cons

Performance management...across the board the promotion process is total trash. Bell curve approach doesnt keep your best talent and you continue to lose them. Dont tell your employees they are doing well and then end up with average reviews.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the performance management process and institute a merit based version where if you perform you get higher salary and eventually a promotion. You will continue to lose top talent if you keep it a popularity contest.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Community involvement, co-workers, leaders, new building, cafe, gym and health center. Also, making customers a priority and treating them with respect and dignity.

    Cons

Way to many levels to get promoted. Example: Floor Supervisor > FLM > UM ... "This is where it gets real stupid"... > "Stretch PA (no pay increase)" > PA > "Stretch DM (no pay increase)" > DM > "Stretch Senior DM (no pay increase)" > Senior DM > "Stretch Director (no pay increase)" etc. The company says they are ensuring you are set up for success, what they are really doing is not paying you for more responsibility. Great way to lose good talented people.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of stretch roles or at the very minimum increase pay while in a stretch role performing next level responsibilities. If that is too much to ask for then shorten stretch roles to no more than 3 - 6 months vs 9 - 18 months.
