I worked at Capital One (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay and benefits. Very talented employees. Good work life balance. Excellent place to learn business strategy, analytics, and customer driven design.

    Cons

Not a very diverse place in SVP+ positions. You are expected to communicate and contribute within a very narrow range to be considered for the best roles. Diversity of thought is ok in mid/low level roles but it is not encouraged in the most senior roles. Working within such a tight range is significantly draining and leads many talented executives to seek opportunities elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Lack of diversity in executive positions is now common knowledge across the organization. Recent actions to compensate for this have not been well thought out. Need stronger commitment to broaden executive openness to listen to and recognize diversity of thought.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Overall Capital One provides a good, stable work environment. Many of the projects are interesting and at times, challenging. Your colleagues are typically very talented and of the same mindset. It may take time, but problematic employees will be managed out.

Benefits, PTO and Work/Life balance are strong pluses for a corporate or professional role. I cannot comment for our call centers and front line roles.

    Cons

Legacy Capital One is very much stuck in the old days and it creates this weird divide between the new arrivals and old guard. This divide helps slow down the company as some groups resist change. Although, this seems to be continually improving.

Invest some more money in Downtown DC, local growth is Fairfax-centric and we are missing a large chunk of our local talent pool.

    Advice to Management

Address the divide between old guard and new arrivals. Provide a transit subsidy to HQ or open more space in the city center.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They bring on people that they think will fit in to the friendly culture. The result is a pretty relaxed workplace. There are no horror stories about how the company turned its back on employees. You generally get the sense that you're working with good people who care about you and the work.

    Cons

Only a handful of teams/roles are able to work with cutting edge technology. A lot of the work is uninspiring and low-visibility, which can lead to a career plateau.

    Advice to Management

Offer more visibility into performance management.
