I worked at CarMax (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Good pay. Opportunity for advancement. Love the people I work with. Easy to talk to management. Employee discount is good as well

    Cons

Always "Driving What's Possible" which means that we do what's right for the customer and going outside of policy most of the time

I have been working at CarMax part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can make money without generating your own leads. Just show up and sell cars. The better you get the more you can make by seeing less customers. Your income depends on how much you develop yourself.

    Cons

Sometimes, you have to be present when people aren't coming in to buy cars, like when there's bad weather or a big sporting event that leaves the store dead. And you're not getting paid for it because people aren't coming in to buy cars.

    Advice to Management

Don't micromanage. Hire the right people, develop them, and let them do their job. If they're not performing, you either hired wrong or need to develop them more. Don't focus on the petty; it gets in the way of production and takes money out of everyone's pocket.

Also, be more selective when hiring sales managers. If someone can't maintain club level, they're probably not fit to develop club level consultants.

I worked at CarMax part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Managers and team leaders were extremely effective in pinpointing the strengths and weaknesses of their subordinates and supporting those same team members in improving their sales techniques. Extremely positive atmosphere!

    Cons

As an employee you must be willing to be readily available for customer calls and emails on a daily (oftentimes hourly) basis.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

I have been working at CarMax part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Good pay for part time.
    Business experience
    Opportunity to move up

    Cons

    Competition
    Dealing with difficult customers
    Leaving later than expected

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to lie about other dealerships. Give us the facts and the tools to overcome those issues.
Focus on who is hired for management. I witnessed some deserving individuals get passed over for some who hid but made their numbers look good.

I worked at CarMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Other department staff is usually nice. Good pay and benefits if you get into the right area. Very nice facilities to work in for the most part.

    Cons

Poor follow up on training by some mentors. Unclear expectations overall when management changes. Race and sex play a huge part in disciplinary action. If you aren't a car guy/gal you won't make it if you succeed regardless of how hard you try or improve.

    Advice to Management

Don't let race/sex influence how you administer disciplinary action. Have regional staff follow up on those in training rather than waiting until the last minute. Managers need to be clear in what you expect of your trainees because not everyone in your position has the same level of expectations.

    Pros

An amazing business concept that works very well.

    Cons

Sales has an extremely high turnover rate.
Benefits are ok, but for a Fortune Top 100 Places to Work... the benefits are pathetic.
Management typically does not have automotive industry experience.
Diversity, diversity, diversity, it is nearly shoved down your throat.

    Advice to Management

Regional management team needs more unannounced store visits to actually witness what the store is really like.

    Pros

Direct feed back is good when you come from a job history that had little or no feedback. They are always treating employees to lunch. Work as a team, its not all on you, if you are a good team member.

    Cons

The feedback is very direct and sometimes harsh. At times you had too much feedback. Confidence is a big key as a buyer. If you have too much negative feedback and don't know how to process it, you can spiral downward quick. You have to be on your toes and have an answer good or bad. if its bad you will know! Being in an office with all managers at times you get advice from all over the place. It sometimes feels like several people are running the show.

    Advice to Management

Feedback is good, but I needs to come from one place. At times there are too many people running the show!

    Pros

A lot of great people, non-managerial employees enjoy work and have fun, learn a lot about cars (makes, models, trim levels, etc.) Great job for college students looking to make decent money and work part-time, opportunities for advancement are available (but lead to nothing). Benefits are good.

    Cons

AVOID ANY ADVANCEMENT INTO MANAGEMENT! Management is a complete mess, everyone micro-managing each other, extremely stressful and pay is based on what you made prior and you receive a very small increase in pay when you are "promoted". Half the day is spent in meetings that are a waste and take away from valuable time that could be spent training associates and helping customers.

CARMAX IS RUN LIKE A TYPICAL BIG BOX RETAILER. Every department is run poorly and inefficiently. People are fired for ridiculous reasons, things that aren't their fault because they literally turn any issue into a corporate investigation. Nothing is handled on a store level by the 15+ managers that are there everyday. Looking back, it's ridiculous and I can't believe I worked there as long as I did!

    Advice to Management

LOL, dunno how you can get Corporate to help much of this...
