I have been working at CarMax full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

CarMax creates an environment that is productive for training if you are willing to learn. Management speaks on development on weekly or monthly basis. Work environment is usually light and fun, but still productive.

    Cons

Occasionally, commitments are not completed. Sales managers allow customers to stretch business hours beyond reasonable accommodation. Some commitments for growth are kept, but not in a timely manner.

I worked at CarMax (More than 3 years)

    Pros

One of Fortune 500 Mag's top 100 companies to work for for 7 years in a row, and it shows. They provide ample training and great benefits and perks. They have matching 401k contributions up to 10% (from what I remember), PTO and sick time accruals for both FT and PT employees. Great working environment and culture in every department. Everyone is there to help one another and very supportive. They love giving recognition and when there are opportunities for improvement, they make a comprehensive roadmap to success.

    Cons

Due to CarMax only selling used cars, the customer base is wide and some of the customers can be unsavory. I have had more rude customers than I can count. It seems that even though CarMax has a specific process, customers treat consultants and a true, slimy, used car salesman. In the business office and auction offices you have to deal with an EXTREMELY fast paced workload and simple mistakes can cost the company a lot of money, so naturally they crack down on all things compliance.

I worked at CarMax full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

CarMax is a truly honest company to work for with a legitimate desire to produce quality cars for their customers. They are also good about investing time into associates to develop them within roles or to help them get to the next level.

    Cons

Mandatory corporate initiatives make their way down to the stores and they sometimes make you wonder if they even understand what occurs in stores on a daily basis. The absolute worst of these initiatives is the MTI (managing to the individual) program... when needed, it is highly effective, but they’ve mandated that all managers keep two associates at any given time on what is essentially performance management without the HR approvals. Well, when you manage small teams, consisting of less than ten people, that’s a little excessive. The associates feel that it is micromanaging, and I have to agree because at some point everyone on your team will have made it through the MTI plans, and then you must find the most minuscule opportunities to micromanage them on just to appease corporate’s demands.

    Advice to Management

Consider the workloads your managers have before you decide to make additional work for them. Also, take into consideration how some of these initiatives are perceived by associates and managers.
