    I worked at CarMax part-time

    Pros

They were very flexible with my schedule

    Cons

Management doesn't address issues within the store. They say they have open communication and will work on the issues but it never changes.

I worked at CarMax full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits/stock options, room for growth. I learned a lot during my time at the company.

    Cons

Very low pay, have to jump through hoops to get promoted, typical retail hours which are not ideal. Business office works as late as 11 PM some nights.

    Pros

Company willing to train, no travel, clean and safe work environment, very friendly co-workers, get to drive cool cars.

    Cons

with straight commission, overtime and days off is a must to keep customers buying from you. It is up to you to learn about the cars and trucks for sale. Commission per car is not nearly enough for many hours required on each customer.

    Advice to Management

Tone down the militaristic structure and foster the creativity that is necessary for successful sales to broad customer base.

I have been working at CarMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management at the store level truly cares about you as a person. Flexibility in scheduling helps when emergencies, or personal situations come up.

    Cons

Strictly commission pay makes it difficult to budget, as business fluctuates. Very few weekend off limit your work life balance.

    Advice to Management

    Stay consistent on information disseminated.

I have been working at CarMax full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, 401k, Scheduling, fun job with an interesting skill set, I love working with my team but the long term outlook is poor

    Cons

VCA position was created to limit the amount of buyers in the company to cut costs, position pays less than half of what a buyer pays and includes many of the same duties.

having the positions work together in one office breeds animosity and leads to low morale.

This position has no room for growth within the company at this point in time and it doesn't look like it will have it in the future.

    Advice to Management

Address concerns of employees and pay competitively for a position that requires a unique and challenging skill set. It is not wise to pay someone near minimum wage in an area and have them responsible for purchasing vehicles that can cost more than their yearly salary.

    Pros

Great culture, competitive pay, concrete road map for promotion. The company is diligent in their training and will provide all of the tools necessary for their employees to succeed.

    Cons

In order to move up within the company, it is almost mandatory to move. When I moved, it was a fantastic experience and would recommend it.

    Advice to Management

I have no additional information to provide. The company always treated me fairly and paid me well.
