I have been working at CarMax part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

High Integrity Culture, Flexible, Helpful Co-Workers & Management, Highly Reputable Company, Comprehensive & Ongoing Training, Very Good Processes in Place.

If you love cars and enjoy the challenge of 100% commission sales but don't like the traditional haggling headaches of car selling, this is a great place to work. I particularly love it as a part time gig. Feels almost like being an independent contractor because of the flexibility. FYI, I used Glassdoor info to help prepare for interviews and get realistic salary info for commissioned sales structure. Info available was very helpful and accurate.

    Cons

Low Pay for Skills Required, Work Almost Every Weekend, Need to Be Highly Available to Make Decent Money

If I really needed the money to pay my bills, I wouldn't like it. I'm in the twilight years of my career so this is perfect. The money is supplementary. So working with a customer for 4-6 hours....or with several customers in a week... and having nothing to show for it is annoying but not really painful. I like the challenge, like the company's culture, and most of the people...and get paid enough for it to be worthwhile. Car selling process can be long and complex. Customers often have to make 2-3 separate visits to get a car. They generally expect to be able to come and do business whenever the store is open and part of the challenge is to garner enough loyalty from them to meet you halfway and honor an available appointment time with YOU to avoid losing too much money in split deals.

    Pros

Helpful management team, always willing to assist with all situations. So much training to make you better.

    Cons

Commission can be more. Doesn't seem fair compared to the profit margin.

    Advice to Management

    Great job coaching everyday.

I have been working at CarMax part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy part-time job. The pay is really good during tax season and the summer.

    Cons

Managers are not the greatest. They tend to micromanage a lot now days. There are some good ones but It really depends on who team you are on. I would not recommend this as a full time job. Great for tax season and summer after that I recommend finding something more stable.

    Advice to Management

Trust in your team. Micromanaging at every level is not okay. It creates a lot of stress and chaos for everyone. Also, get rid of that silly club membership. Some guys are really tricking the system to achieve the membership 😔. I recommend just promoting individuals in general! A lot these guys work hard and deserve to be rewarded without having to cheat their way to the top.
