I worked at CarMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Advancement opportunities. Fun work environment. Stellar benefits package.

    Cons

Retail mindset. Entry level salary compared to industry average. Very corporate and micro-manage attitude at times.

    Advice to Management

Stick to your original company values as you continue to grow. You're starting to lose sight of that.

I worked at CarMax (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Good pay. Opportunity for advancement. Love the people I work with. Easy to talk to management. Employee discount is good as well

    Cons

Always "Driving What's Possible" which means that we do what's right for the customer and going outside of policy most of the time

I worked at CarMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salary was decent, especially the longer you are there (which can result in capped out salaries for some managers who do hardly any work). Yearly raises. Coworkers are easy going and pleasant to be around mostly. Definitely not the typical car dealership setting. Great training for the duration of your career with Carmax. Can use many things that you learn there and apply to other jobs you find in the future.

    Cons

Mid level management basically runs the store while senior management micromanages over your shoulder. Whole sales manager team was unhappy. I put in 60 hours a week to get all my responsibilities done but there's no overtime pay. LGM expects you to do your work and MORE, sometimes even doing things that he is supposed to be responsible for. Not much emphasis on your development or growth (varies per LGM, they're not all like that). Carrot is constantly dangled in front of you with vague responses in your goal to grow towards promotions.

    Advice to Management

Should have more perks or incentives for mid level management because they are the ones running the stores

I have been working at CarMax part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

High Integrity Culture, Flexible, Helpful Co-Workers & Management, Highly Reputable Company, Comprehensive & Ongoing Training, Very Good Processes in Place.

If you love cars and enjoy the challenge of 100% commission sales but don't like the traditional haggling headaches of car selling, this is a great place to work. I particularly love it as a part time gig. Feels almost like being an independent contractor because of the flexibility. FYI, I used Glassdoor info to help prepare for interviews and get realistic salary info for commissioned sales structure. Info available was very helpful and accurate.

    Cons

Low Pay for Skills Required, Work Almost Every Weekend, Need to Be Highly Available to Make Decent Money

If I really needed the money to pay my bills, I wouldn't like it. I'm in the twilight years of my career so this is perfect. The money is supplementary. So working with a customer for 4-6 hours....or with several customers in a week... and having nothing to show for it is annoying but not really painful. I like the challenge, like the company's culture, and most of the people...and get paid enough for it to be worthwhile. Car selling process can be long and complex. Customers often have to make 2-3 separate visits to get a car. They generally expect to be able to come and do business whenever the store is open and part of the challenge is to garner enough loyalty from them to meet you halfway and honor an available appointment time with YOU to avoid losing too much money in split deals.
