I have been working at Caraustar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Get to top pay fast

    Cons

Pay average but almost impossible to get cost of living raises even if you are a high achiever. Management at I&CPG full of little man complexes.

    Advice to Management

Loyalty and respect is a 2-way street.

I worked at Caraustar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for Caraustar at the Tama Paperboard location will help one to appreciate a job with any other company much more.

    Cons

When owned by Tenneco (Packaging Corporation of America) this was a respected place to work. The purchase of the plant by Caraustar set the management talent level and management philosophy back by at least 35 years.
If one is considering working for this company, there are several far better places to work (based on pay, treatment of employees, and employee safety) in town such as the beef packing plant, casino, and convenience stores.

    Advice to Management

The plant makes the entire town reek from the putrid stench of hydrogen sulfide gas because the company is too cheap to spend ~$100 per day to fix the issue.

    Pros

Good location. Some co workers were nice.

    Cons

Company needs to be more outgoing. I was very uncomfortable. Some management were very unprofessional. Management will not train.

    Advice to Management

If you want your employees to succeed help them.

    Pros

The only pro for this job was the pay rate

    Cons

Very hot, stressful, some days no breaks during your 12 hour shift. Having to rotate between days and nights every 2 weeks. Very poor management, very old and dangerous equipment..

I worked at Caraustar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are descent and the pay is good. You will find an extended family below management.

However, cost of living raises are few. Zero... during my time there. There is a bonus plan. But, you will have to jump through all the hoops and complete all of the paperwork required monthly to get it.

    Cons

Micromanagement, bully tactics to intemmidate, and negate an employee's value to the company. Fear tactics will be the demise of this company if they do not change management style.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging... You can't keep strong personalities with leadership skills if you do not allow them to do their job.

    Advice to Management

Completely get rid of the horrible management

I worked at Caraustar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a great place to learn how to work hard and how to manage people if you work your way up.

    Cons

I hated every minute of it. The supervisor and boss always had problems with everyone around and made life miserable. I only stayed as long as I did because the job market was terrible.

    Advice to Management

Pull the stick out of your butt and start treating your employees with some dignity. Maybe if you stopped talking down to them constantly, you might get some decent work out of them.

    Pros

You have a 4yr degree, and have no clue about the business.

    Cons

2yr degree means you are not management material. You will be overlooked even if you know the business and a hard worker.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the union and stop micro managing.

Good regional plant managers, and excellent hourly employees...

    Cons

Growing too fast, no sense of planning, and direction. Major Issues at plant levels... Not willing to listen and adverse to Management of Change.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to your new talent or you will be unfortunately you will not keep top talent.
