I worked at Career Education full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The students, faculty, staff and senior leadership are outstanding. I loved the students. Being part of the future of an industry I love was great.

    Cons

Career education corporation. They have no business or idea on how to run a brick and mortar school. They provide no orientation or job training. They rollout software without testing it, troubleshooting it or fitting it to the schools needs. I spent months learning a new inventory control system for it to be pulled out from underneath me and have a less productive ICS dropped on me that took more time to learn and did less. All the while my other daily activities had to be accomplished.

    Advice to Management

School level management: you guys are great and are doing an outstanding job.
CEC: it doesn't matter what I say they never listen, plus who knows who will be the CEO this week.

I have been working at Career Education full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary is good and most of the people are great to work with. Free food and good benefits.

    Cons

Typical executive management incompetence and greed. Any money the Company makes stays at the top. Stagnant wages, cuts in benefits and layoffs every year.

    Pros

At one point a good company to work for in a shaky industry. Great people to work with, decent benefits and good work life/home life balance. The location is convenient near shopping and restaurants as well as access to highways.

    Cons

As with all for profit educational schools, CEC is under heavy fire from the government that is ultimately shrinking the industry to a shell of itself. Unfortunately, despite numerous directional changes and restructures, the outlook for CEC is grim. It is a top heavy organizational structure and declining business with too many stalemates at the top making the same poor business choices over the past 6-7 years. Couple that with the industry comments I made and you can envision it all coming to an end.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring re-treads from the industry that are just collecting fat checks and overhaul the top level of management(including the BOD). And not just the very top, but your Sr. VPs and VPs that are still steering the ship into the iceberg.

    Pros

This company had great benefits and a casual work culture for years.

    Cons

The company is drowning; working there was like being on the Titanic.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people on the front lines and stop making decisions that are not based on the actual business that is done.

I worked at Career Education full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great Location - Chicago NW Suburbs,
    Great Starting Pay,
    Fun Break Rooms (Pop-Shot Basketball)

    Cons

Poor Executive Leadership - former CEO resigned in early 2015 for undisclosed reasons,
History of Mass Layoffs - Most Recently in July 2015,
Lack of Company Culture - there is no sense of pride in being a CEC employee, everyone is just there for a paycheck

    Advice to Management

Re-brand the organization to promote CEC's proprietary student experience software platform,
Hire a new CEO from an external organization and different industry outside for for-profit education to help reshape the company's culture

I worked at Career Education full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The hours/time off was great--we were off when the students were off (4-5 weeks a year) and it was rare to work a full 40 hours. Rarely had to work a weekend day, sometimes a few hours on a Saturday. If you're teaching in your industry, you'll stay connected to your craft with a great work-life balance.

    Cons

Very heavy on retention--of student tuition dollars. More than once i was "heavily encouraged" to break academic integrity to boost a grade for a failing student. Some of the leadership at my location thought it was OK to curse, throw things and insult staff regularly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the people and the profits will come.

I worked at Career Education full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Critical focus on expense reduction could provide expedited career advancement opportunities to junior, less experienced employees.

    Cons

Far too frequent changes in senior management made developing a clear mission and achieving healthy culture extremely difficult. Performance suffered as a result.

    Advice to Management

Develop a business model that is not entirely reliant on Title 4 funds. Establish and stick with A mission and core values for more than 12 months.
