Cargas lives and breathes the ideas of shared success, teamwork, and collaboration

    Jun 28, 2021 - Project Manager

    Business Outlook

    Pros

At all levels, the idea of shared success with employees, customers, partners, owners, and the community is practiced and encouraged. Because of this, Cargas has a high degree of integrity in all dealings. And the idea of shared success extends to the daily interactions of the various teams within the company. Teamwork and collaboration thrive because of the culture of shared success. That's just part of the culture. The other key piece is the focus on quality and customer satisfaction. Cargas is committed to delivering the right solution at the right time to customers. Whether that quality is embedded with Cargas developed solutions or on the best implementations of the CRM, ERP, and Accounting solutions, it is paramount to the way they do business. If you want to go to work for a company whom you can feel good about every day, Cargas is it.

    Cons

The only downside is that pay is not going to be at the top of the scale. Cargas' strategy is to be middle of the road on pay brackets. So if you're looking for top dollar, Cargas might not be your place. On the other hand, the superior culture makes it an easy trade off to receive a fair, but not top of the scale compensation.

    Koolaid with some substance

Mar 14, 2021 - Technical Role in Lancaster, PA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good amount of smart motivated people. Flexible work environment. Acceptable work life balance - rarely see people working much over 40 hours a week. Still profitable a year into Covid. Quite a few catered lunches, happy hours, and other perks. Profit sharing with bonus potential. Open financial profit and loss statements. Ability to buy company stock. For Lancaster County pay/benefits are in the middle though remains to be seen with rapidly rising living costs how it will adjust. Modern technology and office space.

    Cons

You can coast here for years. Competent hardworking employees are overextended while others get to feign incompetence. Long tenured employees whose dated skills and knowledge are irrelevant in a constantly changing and advancing tech field are kept on and often promoted. Not very good communication between different teams. Lack of standardized processes. Way too many overly opinionated people in decision making. Not the most interesting work. They start new people at more than someone that has been there 5 years makes. Bad behavior isn't always punished.

    A Torn Experience

Jun 29, 2021 - Business Analyst in Lancaster, PA

    Pros

    - Once you understand the software and industry; the work isn't really that challenging. - The people I worked with in general were enjoyable individuals - They are transitioning from in office to allow more remote work (including full time remote, manager dependent) - If you go into the office, the building is new, but the workplace setting is dated. - Cargas allows movement between positions within your own business unit and with the other business units if you desire a change and have the skills and aptitude. - If you are at least semi-decent at your job and don't cause a stir, you can coast here if that is your thing (this was mentioned in a prior review). - Profit sharing, more on this in the negatives. - Bonuses, more on this in the negatives.

    Cons

    - A lot of what I am saying with product has to do with Energy, as I do not have experience working in the other business units. - Confusing product strategy as it is driven by multiple individuals - Because of the conflicting messages and desires of a product vision, a lot of product decisions end up becoming rushed without allowing product management to conduct due diligence with research and solutions. Often times we in product don't know the problem we are solving when given something by the higher level individuals. - It often takes 1-2 years for larger features to begin development, which again is caused by conflicting vision between departments and not letting product management research. - A lot of technical debt. - Larger customers get priority over the smaller customers, but if you calculate the total customer's Cargas Energy has, id estimate 80% are of the mid to smaller size. - Cargas Energy is in the fossil fuel and propane delivery software industry, which quickly becoming regulated out. - Pay is mediocre. They might start you low and then give you an "adjustment" in a few years to bring you to industry low-mid range. - Health insurance and 401k match are TERRIBLE. - Low amount of PTO. - As a consultant, I often worked or traveled over holidays. - A lot of positions are given to individuals without opening them up to internal interviews. Some of these individuals are promoted not based on how well they would do in the new role, but how well they did on the old role (this was mentioned in a previous review). - If you leave before profit sharing period has ended (1/1-6/30 and 7/1-12/31), then you will not receive a prorated share based on your input you did during your time there. - If you speak out, you will either be ignored or terminated. - Bonuses have no actual targets. - Lack of professional development planning. - Company preaches a "Lancaster first" mentality, but some leadership left Lancaster without the company telling employees or explaining the circumstances.

    Pros

Nice office. Good processes. Nice amenities.

Benefits are not great. Much of middle management is lacking in perspective and empathy for employees. Fixating on hard numbers and ignoring culture fit and soft skills.

A Company Who Truly "Gets It"

    Jul 10, 2019 - Designer

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Outstanding flexible schedules and work/life balance. Coworkers with positive and pleasant attitudes. No closed door meetings. Trust in the employees, because, after all, it's an employee owned company.

    Cons

Sometimes there can be too many cooks in the kitchen. If you're not a self motivator with the inner drive to achieve, Cargas might not be the place for you.

Best Place to Work - Literally!

Nov 19, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Lancaster, PA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Cargas offers a rare and unique employee ownership culture, referred to as Shared Success. It's simple concept of creating a winning environment for owners, employees, customers, partners and community. This company has been on the Best Place to Work in PA list for 10 times, including #1 and #2 rankings along the way. All for a reason: Cargas is simply an awesome company, with an outstanding founder, executives who care and employees that you consider friends and family. I would recommend employment or our software to anyone I know. This is a top notch, class act company with a promising future of growth and success.

    Cons

With success comes growth, which can jeopardize the integrity of values. Values are what the company was founded on and those same values need to be protected at all costs. So far, so good on this front but something to always be thinking of and monitoring.
