I worked at Cargill full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hours were pretty reasonable...although you are basically on call 24/7 365, the demands outside of the office are reasonable.

    Cons

    Where do we begin?
The management is the worst I have seen in any organization. Although Cargill as a whole maintains a good brand image, the business unit I was in was full of uneducated and absent management. It was clear that you climb the ranks because of someone you know and not because of skills or potential. Management was basically just there to collect their enormous salaries with minimal effort.

The salary left a lot to be desired...and the benefits are terrible, high deductible plans with high out of pocket maximums.

If you desire to better yourself through further education get ready to play 20 questions...instead of getting support with your goals, they become paranoid that your end goal is to leave them.

Overall, a top heavy, stagnant workplace with virtually no room for advancement filled with inept management. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere before considering working here.

    Advice to Management

Get with it. You collect a huge paycheck for a reason...you need to manage your people and build them up not scold them like dogs whenever mistakes are made (due to your lack of actually performing your duties). Do the organization a favor, start playing your part because so far it has been a miserable failure.

I physically worked at a small office located in Ankeny, IA, which is in complete disarray. The bad management also was pervasive at the home office in Wichita, KS which is where many of the large salary underperforming management reside.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Love the hourly workers. Friendly, hard working people.

    Cons

HUGE turnover rate. Management doesn't care about the people, everyone doesn't care just trying to get through the job. Not friendly or supportive management. Hard to work with coworkers to do the job that think the plant is a highschool. They say they care about home work life balence, but they don't.
If you're a profesional, no room for advancement at mason city location, they don't want you to train or learn new job skills. Its like they are waiting for the younger college kids to come in with no experience and expect them to know anything about manufacturing.

    Advice to Management

    Don't be high school gossipers

    Pros

Diverse portfolio, beautiful campus, global opportunities, competitive benefit plans, privately held company is nice which gives it the flexibility to make changes without being driven by public opinion.

    Cons

Slow to change despite privately held, flat organization, disconnected, ancient data and analytics, manages by consensus, does not value knowledge and experience, decisions made in a vacuum.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the voice of your employees

I have been working at Cargill full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, fair pay and benefits. Opportunity for incoming applicants to rebuild.

    Cons

Always lagging behind in IT methodology. i.e. Agile has only been formally allowed by the PMO in the last year or so.

As one of those recently "impacted" by reorg, I will be leaving Cargill soon after 20 years of service. I'm one of many senior professions being displaced in favor of outsourcing and offshore service centers. The loss of knowledge is extensive. Impact to our internal customers will be high. Employee morale is very low. The next few years in IT are going to be very rocky.

    Advice to Management

Trying to replace a senior professional with 1-3 entry level individuals doesn't wok. Instead of having loyal people who can troubleshoot complex issues and think on their feet, your customers are getting people who can't think beyond the list of 10 things they have as a script and leave as soon as their shift is over. Five years ago, you could feel the loyalty of the employees. That's not the case today. I wish Cargill and the remaining employees well. I will be keeping in touch with amazing coworkers who have also been impacted. Some people, you shouldn't let go of. You should keep that in mind.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work arrangements are a plus.

    Cons

More and more work is shifted to Costa Rica and India. Lots of lost jobs in the United States. Moral is very low.

    Advice to Management

Value the employees you have instead of trying to move jobs to other countries to save money.

    Pros

Big company, lots of businesses and markets it operates in.

    Cons

Current CEO and leadership has twisted the company into something unrecognizable. Used to reward loyalty and invest in people... no longer the case. They now act like a publicly held company but continue to pay like a privately held company.

    Advice to Management

You have drastically changed your value proposition as an Employer. You will continue to bleed talent until you align pay to opportunity and stability (which is no longer there).

    Pros

Good stable company. Nice people. Company is moving in positive direction. Good company to work for if you're complacent with your life and have little ambition.

    Cons

Little room to move up in the company unless you're willing to constantly relocate. Well below industry standard on compensation. Lots of unneeded nitpicky changes that drive employees crazy. Not for the non-complacent type.

    Advice to Management

    Reward the hard working individuals

I worked at Cargill full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are somewhat competitive depending on the business unit. The company provides good opportunities and experience for those interested in starting a career in manufacturing or furthering your career in this industry. Safety is a priority. If you can handle Cargill you succeed anywhere else!

    Cons

Company has chosen a negative path when it comes to HR. The vision has changed to an inpersonal approach towards our biggest asset: employees. Technology is an amazing tool but it will never replace people and the need for support through in person interactions. The message has been negative. Company decisions are not employee focused, company core values are compromised and hardly take in account what employees would like to see/want or actually need accross the board-hourly & salaried through all levels. Massive layoffs "restructures/transformations"/ "outsourcing critical business transactions" accross the businesses in areas such as, yet not limited to: Accounting/IT/HR, and it seems to continue. No organization/proccesses are not streamlined, no recognition for hardwork/company loyalty/thinking outside the box and absolutely no consideration at all towards work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Employee needs come first. Focus on what they need and what actions can be taken to have your people succeed in life and work. Employees accross all levels work hard, long hours this is why they should be treated better in all aspects including monetarily and valued much more; not just "saying you do" is putting it in action.
