I worked at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of job security at Carilion. Lots of opportunity to move positions once you get your foot in the door. Really good PTO, you earn almost 5 weeks a year starting out.

    Cons

Pay is fairly low compared to most other health care facilities. They will not hesitate to overload you with patients whenever you are short staffed. Also the standard for cleanliness is very low, some days it was a very dirty place to work.

    Advice to Management

Pay more, retain more. Outsourcing a cleaning company isn't a bad idea, that place does not get cleaned as often as it should.

I have been working at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Magnet facility. Shared governance is important. Old side of the hospital being renovated. Nurses voices are being heard more and more, raises are becoming more common.

    Cons

Salary could be more, but like I said there have been more raises recently.

I worked at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time

    Pros

The company is dedicated to the care of the community. Benefits are wonderful, vacation time is standard. New state of the art facilities are being incorporated onto campus.

    Cons

This is a very nurse centered hospital. Disrespect from the nurses is rampant and the doctors tend to take it, not sure why.

    Advice to Management

    No advice really, except
Listen to what your doctors are telling you. Some malicious behaviors of some nurses have the potential to create a toxic environment.

I have been working at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Trauma level 1 facility, great learning experiences, cardiology team, use of resource pool, lots of classes available to further education

    Cons

Short staffed at times, not always flexible with work/life balance, pay lower than surrounding hospitals, one small bonus at xmas and very small raises

    Advice to Management

More needs to be based on merit. There are basically no bonuses and very little increase in base pay year to year. Instead of giving staff deserved pay would rather offer a 4K recruitment bonus or rentention bonus on another unit

    Cons

Low pay compared to other hospitals with the same expectations.

    Advice to Management

Pay your nurses more so they will stay longer

I have been working at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1) one of top-rated hospitals in the region and country
    2) chaplaincy services well integrated into treatment teams, understood and utilized appropriately
    3) my manager has a transparent style in leading chaplaincy staff--WYSIWYG

    Cons

Some nurses have repeatedly told me their units are understaffed, therefore they are more stressed than usual by having to care for more patients than is typical. Apparently this is a budgetary issue.
