I have been working at Carleton University full-time

    Pros

Very good pay; easy to get 'tenure; 'never have to work overtime; opportunities to study for second degree while you work; sabbaticals

    Cons

Poor staff relations, lack of staff diversity, intense politics, lack of motivation, consistently do not hire or reward creative employees. Focus is on trivialities and never big picture. Management makes all decisions, communication is lateral. Inward-looking, self-congratulatory culture ignores needs of clients. Old ways of doing things are duplicated for decades.. Little ability to affect change, standards/expectations of staff are low. Little interest or motivation to examine new technology or look critically at a situation drives away most talented. Bureaucracy crippling. You will be living in Ottawa and will find the city itself has same flavour.

    Advice to Management

Take an honest look at the inefficiency and apathy that staff are forced to contend with, due to the organizational climate. Dare to challenge staff to perform to a higher standard.

I worked at Carleton University full-time

    Pros

    Very easy to get tenure.
It is primarily an undergraduate teaching university.
    Very weak leadership.

    Cons

    Very easy to get tenure.
    Very average students.
It is primarily an undergraduate teaching university.
    Very weak leadership.
Although there are small pockets of very good research, it is not an appropriate venue for a serious research Professor.

    Pros

Great Management and feedback, flexible hours, access to university services, beautiful campus. Room for progress and promotion, career advice services and opportunity to learn more about university before attending it.

    Cons

Near minimum wage (but what can you expect from a part-time summer job anyway), Small team overloaded with work some times

    Advice to Management

You need to advertise more about the opportunities available on campus, as much as you do on the off-campus ones

    Pros

They have good tools and good measurement facilities

    Cons

Calibration of measurement equipment could be much better.

    Advice to Management

Collaboration is much better than competition in a research environment.

    Pros

The main focus is that it is pretty much a research based project that I am working on and I am improving day by day.

    Cons

Basically, the downsides are not that much at carleton university. Sometimes, the lab is crowded and people are chatting so it is hard to focus.

I worked at Carleton University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Youthful work environment
    - Looks good on the resume
    - Work you can feel good about doing because it's contributing to the education experience of others

    Cons

    - When working as a TA supporting courses taught by contract instructors I was often frustrated because they were thrown into their position with little preparation and there was a lot of confusion
    - When working as a residence fellow I often felt annoyed with the unnecessarily strict and subjectively evaluated programming expectations that didn't jive with the reality of the wants or needs of the students
    - Sometimes the approach of the institution toward students, staff and faculty felt a little too profit-driven for a place of learning -- I felt the quality of the educational experience being provided by the school was sometimes compromised by the amount of students the school wanted to admit into its programs and residence buildings without the proper space, staff or resources to accommodate increased numbers (e.g. new residence buildings were built without new senior residents or onsite counselors being hired or cafeteria space being added)

    Advice to Management

    - Please train and pay your contract instructors more so TAs feel less overwhelmed and more supported

    Pros

    Excellent research opportunity
    Great place to network
    Great staff

    Cons

    Post graduate opportunities limited
    Reputation needs improvement

    Advice to Management

Expenditures should be geared more towards better learning and better well learned professors.
