    Great place to work, Great coworkers. There were obviously an expected set of tasks but nothing was ever unreasonable.

    It gets hot in the summer.

    EMPLOYEES ON THE FLOOR Vacation after 6 months

    Cons

    Operators taking hour long breaks and nothing said to them. Evaluations not given in a timely manner. Office employees acting like they are better than anyone else.
    No sick days.

    Advice to Management

    Get out on the floor and see what's going on. You will actually who works and who don't. I was a great inspector but left alone most of the time. I could never level up because the operator was never around. I left because of this. GET RID OF THE FAVORTISM. You do have a handful of employees who care about quality, but they go unnoticed.

    Pros

    Decent pay for hourly employees, benefits are only marginally sub-par.

    Cons

    This is difficult for me to write, because I truly loved this company and my coworkers. However, corporate management needs to make changes or the company cannot survive, so here it goes.

    First, the management culture is composed of heavily entrenched silos. The CEO is virtually absent in any attempt to bridge the communication gap and this results in the right hand knowing nothing about what the left hand is doing. Every problem becomes a war about who is to blame instead of how to solve it.

    Second, the management culture is stuck in an 80’s style leadership practice that prefers isolating leaders from everyday business functions, then empowering ONLY those leaders to solve problems with which they have virtually no direct interaction. The result becomes a series of blind decisions that look great on paper, but have no chance of actually succeeding in the current environment. Stack on to this the the problem that the isolating principle creates when leaders make decisions in a “leadership team” or “executive committee” bubble, but those decisions are not communicated well if at all to low-level leaders or anyone who can actually perform the task.

    Third, there is an extreme disparate array of business practices between different sites, and little to no communication between them. This results in otherwise capable people assuming that business environments are identical when they are not. Those same leaders, as in the second problem, make decisions that would work for one area but not others. The plan inevitably fails, usually after several meetings held which include no one who could actually warn the group that the plan will fail. Which brings me to the fourth problem.

    Fourth, the management culture is such that people are rewarded for agreeing and punished for dissenting. People who flag potential issues in meetings are inevitably excluded from future meetings. People who agree with every plan blindly are praised, or even promoted. The culture is completely devoted to yes-men and political game-playing. Of course, people do still stop projects they don’t agree with...which is part of the fifth problem.

    Fifth, any idea that gains support in a meeting, but is not liked by those with political power (usually because it may threaten that political power), WILL be shot down. However, it won’t happen in a meeting or for any reason that actually has merit (see problem four). It is stopped behind closed doors with private conversations, or it is simply ignored entirely until it fails. Of course, some ideas that ARE supported might be ignored entirely and fail anyway, but because those tasked with doing the work are simply too busy or not interested in doing it. It’s often hard to figure out which reason applies to which failing project, but it’s probably academic. In any event, the project is allowed to fail because the leaders who have actual authority keep themselves isolated and do not follow through on current projects (see problem two).

    Sixth and final, the shear number of excuses I have heard coming out of corporate headquarters is just plain staggering. “That’s not my job.” “I shouldn’t have to do that for them.” “They should already know that.” “They have to do that themselves.” “I sent an e-mail back on xxx date, it’s not my fault.” This is absolutely unacceptable. People at the plants are working hard every day. People at corporate (with few exceptions) are working hard to CYA. It’s nonsense, and if there was a real leader in the group it wouldn’t be tolerated. But there isn’t one, and so it continues.

    Advice to Management

    First, start shuffling your plant leadership between the sites so that the micro-cultures can start mixing. That’s how you get a real “One Carlex”.

    Second, start trading out every single VP. They had their chance, and aren’t doing the job. Trade in or hire up as you see fit, but put the rest of corporate leadership on notice. If the culture doesn’t change, keep trading people out until no one remains with that out-dated management style.

    Third, when a project is agreed upon, for better or worse, put ONE person in charge of it and give that person the authority to enforce the needs of the project on those who need to do the task. Hold people accountable. You’ll fire an hourly for being late a handful of times, but you won’t fire a salary for refusing to do work? Think it through.

    Finally, good luck. Although this review was profoundly negative, I have a lot of love and loyalty to this company. I put my sweat and tears into a family of coworkers in order to make a success out of this company. I left because the executive team are more interested in their careers than their company, but that also means that I whole-heartedly want good things for the company.

    So just to summarize, to the CEO...do better. You have a host of professionals and an army of hourlies working themselves to exhaustion for you. Don’t throw that away just for the hubris of half a dozen people with more title than they deserve.

    They pay well for a factory/warehouse, the benefits are good.

    Cons

    Terrible staff selection. Poor attitudes, mistreatment of employees, sexual harassment is overlooked. Dangerous work conditions too.

    Advice to Management

    Hire PEOPLE FRIENDLY leads/supervisors/super intendents NOT drug addicted junkies, nobody should be making over 50k a year bullying and demeaning people for their own sick enjoyment. Invest in the broken machines tearing people’s bodyparts off and killing them. Get that asbestos and those infestations exterminated!!
