I have been working at Carlow College full-time

    Pros

Dedicated employees Handicapped accessible Rich history of Sisters of Mercy

    Cons

High turnover throughout entire univeristy. Salary scales not present and salary freezes are often. People are walked out often and given no reason - no due process at all. Seniority does not matter. Some people walked out after 30 years. Parking and health benefits increase more than salaries, so your net income is constantly moving backwards.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your employees like people and not servants. Give your employees a reason to stay and not just use Carlow as a stepping stone in their career. Yes, your customers are your students, but you will not retain them if they see the dysfunction of the univeristy and such high turnover of your faculty/staff due to your unethical and unequitable treatment.

I have been working at Carlow College full-time

    Pros

People are great to work with.

    Cons

Salaries well below average so you lose talented people to other universities. You meet about issues that are occurring and nothing is ever done to rectify them. Becoming a toxic work environment.

    Advice to Management

Bring salaries up to current standards and open your eyes to what going on throughout the university.

I worked at Carlow College full-time

    Pros

Many, many faculty and staff care deeply about the original mission and the students the university serves.

    Cons

Current administration is incompetent and insecure.

    Advice to Management

Step aside and let someone who deeply cares about the mission and who has the skills and abilities to actually lead take over.

I have been working at Carlow College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Coworkers are friendly and campus is welcoming. Community is based in mercy values Perks include free parking in the summer and decent amount of time off during Christmas

    Cons

Severely understaffed and low pay are common complaints for all areas of the University. High turnover thwarts the campus from moving forward. Most areas are operating in antiquated ways and the culture is a bit conservative.

    Advice to Management

Spend time coaching for upward movement and provide more staffing to meet campus needs

I worked at Carlow College full-time

    Pros

Most employees (especially those NOT in administration) are passionate, talented, and extremely dedicated to the mission of the University. They are energetic go-getters who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. The energy is infectious and one can't help but be inspired and motivated to do the best work possible.

    Cons

Because they are so dedicated to the mission, most employees work for well-below market value. Benefits are not great. In recent years, the administration has shifted drastically and the mission is muddled, leading to frustration. The go-getters are deflated by administrative politics. Like all universities, Carlow is abandoning its core mission to function more like a business in order to make money and stay afloat... in a more competitive market.

    Advice to Management

Dig deep and really focus on the mission of the University. Treat people--especially employees--with kindness and respect and they will work hard for you (despite the limited pay, benefits, and opportunity for advancement). Eliminate the politics that stand in the way of getting good things done.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Carlow College

    Pros

Fantastic mission Most of the faculty and staff are wonderful people Good sense of community Very interesting work Great sense of pride for the work we are doing and the heritage of the institution Great location

    Cons

The current president (here for 2 1/2 years) is driving away valuable employees. While she IS making important changes that are long overdue, she is doing it at the expense of hard-working, dedicated people. She is over-working administrators and at the same time treating them very badly -- very tone deaf behavior on her part. Turnover is way too high in the administration as well as in middle management.

    Advice to Management

Treat your administrators and middle management with respect Do not publicly humiliate people. Reward people for extraordinary accomplishments. Pay attention to how many large projects are happening simultaneously and do not pile on, do not schedule long low-value meetings during the busiest weeks of the semester, etc.. This turnover is costing the organization in many ways: financially, efficiency, morale,... lost opportunity.
