I worked at Carlson Hotels (Less than a year)

    Pros

Learning how to deal with unreasonable coworkers is a skill...

    Cons

No vacation for the first year (how is this even acceptable??), extremely poor management, lack of respect among coworkers

    Advice to Management

Fire managers who very clearly are not in touch with employee needs and current market environment.

    Pros

Great locations to work. Large company benefits. Good selection of product. Good reporting systems.

    Cons

If the management agreement on the property is management only vs. a corporate owned hotel, the system of reporting is different. Too much time spent on reporting vs. outside with client.

    Pros

Some nice perks, like discounts to stay at hotels around the world. Staff at the individual hotels are very nice, however the management in the corporate office is atrocious. Nice offices and covered parking.

    Cons

People are let go randomly, one day you have one boss and the next you're working for someone else. Vacation and time off is adequate, but the pay is low compared to other businesses.

    Advice to Management

Quit wasting money on things that don't matter to the hotels.

I have been working at Carlson Hotels full-time

    Pros

The pay is above the market rate.

    Cons

The company is micro managed and the power to make decisions is vested in a limited few.

I worked at Carlson Hotels full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company gave me some wonderful opportunities to grow and travel and they have some strong female leadership. Decent benefits.

    Cons

I worked there for over 10 years and in the past few years saw the leadership of the company completely go down hill. It is obvious that the company is now being run by the third generation of Carlson's who seem more intent on selling off all the assets than investing in the future of the company. Many of the leaders of the company are the worst managers I have ever known. More and more they are employing leaders who feel that yelling at the employees to get them to do more work is more productive than helping them grow and learn in their positions. About 50% of the time when a new department leader is hired, most people in the department are eliminated and they bring in all new people. This is just a horribly inefficient way to run a business. The company is so full of directors and vice presidents it's just silly. They all treat anyone below director level as if any decisions that are being made are none of their concern and to JUST DO THE WORK OR ELSE.

    Advice to Management

Nurture and grow your employees rather than eliminating them. Have an honest constructive conversation with your employees to help them grow. Oh and quit yelling at everyone - making them afraid that they are going to lose their jobs if they don't work 60 hours a week.

    Pros

    Beautiful building and wonderful setting

    Cons

The management people play a lot of games and they keep doing the same thing over and over again with no results.

    Advice to Management

Keep your eyes open for the crooks

I worked at Carlson Hotels full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked in the corporate office in Minnetonka for Carlson Hotels Worldwide. Nice, hard working people amongst the worker bees. I gained valuable experience about the hospitality industry. I also worked with outside vendors who were fabulous and remain great contacts.

    Cons

The management changed almost quarterly. As soon as you figured out what was expected and got a handle on projects, the VP was fired and you had to start anew. Also, they hired people that had hotel experience but weren't good managers in a corporate environment. Also, the pay was very low. I didn't realize until I left after eight years there how little they paid.

    Advice to Management

HIre some normal people to manage the departments and there won't be so much turnover. Also quit relying on the European personnel to run things here in the US - the markets aren't the same.

    Pros

I love the staff I work with. Everyone here is like family to me. It is a fun atmosphere and everyone works well together.

    Cons

Honestly I have not been here long, but I have not ran into anything yet that has bothered me.
