"Low pay & poor perks; unskilled project managers; occasionally interesting and creative"

    Pros

There are a few highly skilled and intelligent employees at the firm. Management is responsive to requests for time off and allows it to be taken weeks at a time. If you are outspoken regarding what you want or where you want to be, you will be satisfied. Stable pipeline of projects and work (even during down economy). Clear bonus structure.

    Cons

Mediocre pay and limited bonus structure do not effectively motivate non-managerial employees. Low "per diem" vs. competitors. Most project managers tow the company line and force the problems "into the box." Unlike competitors, consultants fly out Sunday and return Friday evening.

    Advice to Management

Pay people more and link bonuses to company performance in addition to individual performance. Expose senior consultants to higher level client meetings in opportunities to present findings.

    Pros

Travel on Sunday, fly home Saturday if you're into that stuff. They do get good clients though

    Cons

Very poor project managers. The per diem is way below industry average. It was expected to have to work several 30 hour days, which is dangerous in the environment I was assigned to.

    Advice to Management

Better training for project managers, pay the going rate for per diem. Dont train people to stuff results down the clients throats.

"Carpedia disappoints on compensation, professional development, and work/life balance."

    Pros

There are some very bright people sprinkled amongst some seriously blinded managers and directors. You'll have the opportunity to show off your work to a partner of the firm about 2 days per week when they are on site on your project. If you stick around long enough (e.g. greater than two years) and you are very out spoken about your project assignments you will get an opportunity to work on projects in a very diverse array of industries and or sectors. If you are lucky with project timing you may be able to slide onto assignments in very "cool" industries such as luxury hotels or las vegas casinos or manufacturing factories or cement truck companies.

Generally the consultants, sr. consultants, and project managers are young and collegial making for a good social environment.

In the summer the company all gathers with significant others at a nice resort north of Toronto for a weekend of fun and debauchery.

    Cons

The travel is the most obvious downside of working at Carpedia as it is 100% meaning that you will leave your house on Sunday afternoon in time to make a flight to the client city for a Monday morning start, then leave the client site after 12 noon on Friday with a long shot of making dinner at home. The travel accommodations are not dirt cheap, but not on par with any reputable consulting firm's practice. You will generally stay at Hampton Inn - better than Best Western, but a step down from a run of the mill Hilton.

The next most disappointing aspect of working at Carpedia would be the lack of real interest in training and development. It is a small enough company that the project managers are hesitant to really develop any employees in fear of working themselves out of the limited project management slots. Further the projects are structured so that each consultant operates in a silo for their department and expected savings leading to a lack buy in from fellow consultants for the your success. Consultants are invited to training day once per quarter at headquarters, but often consultants are "too important" to their current projects so they are unable to attend, or for one reason or another the training session is canceled at the last second.

    Advice to Management

Senior Management should recognize their disparity in compensation vs other operational consulting firms that require such rigorous travel patterns. Either increase the compensation or decrease the travel. Competitors generally offer BOTH 50% higher base salaries AND Monday to Friday travel (as opposed to Sunday to Friday). Senior Management should understand the value in an extra night at home as they generally travel no more than 2 nights per week.

Then, senior management should take a real interest in the development of their firms. Implement a mentorship program. Clarify the REALISTIC career ladder, then stick to it. Take the guess work out of promotions and raises.

I have been working at Carpedia International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Exposure: you are immediately in front of the client on a week to week basis, something that you wouldn't normally get a shot at until later at other consulting firms
    - Creativity: While there is a distinct approach to delivering a project, the method and development of opportunities is drastically different from client to client, allowing staff to be creative with solutions
    - Working Environment: you are surrounded by young, bright minds and also have knowledge and leadership from experienced executives at the company who foster a work hard/play hard mentality
    - Travel: The perks with travel are a great benefit (travel on weekends to exciting destinations within budget) in addition to reaping the points rewards from airlines, hotel brands, and car rental comapnies

    Cons

    - Travel: While this is a pro, it is also a con as it becomes difficult for a lot of people to manage being away from home 100% of the time

    Advice to Management

Continue to think of interesting and creative ways to develop current staff in addition to attracting intelligent prospective employees.

    Pros

Size of the company allows you take on a tremendous amount of responsibility for age/stage of career.

If single and no strings attached, travelling can be fun. Company is quite flexible compared to other consulting companies with travel policies.

    Cons

Approach to most projects is quite cookie cutter. No opportunity for innovative and outside the box thinking.

Lots of luck involved regarding career progression (being in the right place at the right time, rather than just meritocracy).

    Advice to Management

Improve the hiring process to ensure you are taking on intelligent and driven employees who fit the profile. Treat employees better to reduce turnover and hold onto better talent so that aspiring new employees have more impressive people to learn from.

    Pros

Carpedia affords it's employers unparalleled job security, particularly for the consulting industry. The work life balance for head office employees is also fantastic, and some positions afford the opportunity to work from home as well. Salary is comparable or higher than market rate.

    Cons

Difficult to qualify for an equity position within the company, however no more difficult than any of it's competitors in the industry.
