I worked at Carrier Clinic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Vast majority of the staff were very caring and positive. Working with the patients is very fulfilling. Nice environment, peacocks on campus.

    Cons

Chronically understaffed, staff at all levels stretched thin.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people, pay staff more, be more present.

    Pros

Love patients, co-workers: a great learning experience if you are interested in behavioral health and care about this area - look at it as an "internship" - for all the times mentioned positively by staff, not one manager approached me to tell me.

    Cons

As with most corporations, this one is has so many levels of upper management and is so politically wrong, that it will make your head spin. Speaking up respectfully gets you nowhere - all the people that were an inspiration when I was hired, were gone within less than a year. Staff splitting abundant. Sad but true. Weak representation for nursing, for all staff - literally stayed for my co-workers. I will miss them and the patients. Staff -overall - work as a team. Managers are never around - and if they are - they are pulled away for meetings that last indefinitely and the salaries for management is crazy for a non-profit organization. Carrier spent millions of dollars on expansion - hallways are long and the outer structure looks great - one problem - no one factored in that more beds means more staff. This alone, left a tremendous burden on the loyal staff that have stayed. They are miserable. I miss them all. They are troopers. Management does not deserve such loyalty.

    Advice to Management

Stop wasting money on more managers that are completely disconnected from staff and spend it on the STAFF that are loyal, show expertise in this area of patient care and reward them accordingly. Do not leave departments without management and leave other departments "top heavy with managers".

I worked at Carrier Clinic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most coworkers have a strong moral compass and care about the patients, and most are hardworking enough to keep things flowing smoothly. While I do think there is lots of room for improvement, I'd be able to rest peacefully if someone I cared about was admitted here. Just because of the people who work here, I felt compelled to review this place and give it 4.5 stars.

If you like this kind of work, you will have an opportunity to make impacts on people's lives.

Tuition reimbursement and opportunity for mobility between departments and units.

Lots of opportunity for PTO, extra shifts, etc. All the usual benefits of unionized hospitals.

    Cons

    No major complains but-

I wish greater precautions were taken with certain patients that the hospital is ill-equipped to handle, or perhaps they were just not admitted at all. It's the mental health techs and nurses that put themselves at risk.

Cell phone policy is archaic, especially for nightshift; phones help employees stay awake.

    Advice to Management

I can't speak for non-clinical staff, but whatever process is in place to hire clinical staff is working out great, and I hope you continue to hire great people.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Carrier Clinic part-time

    Pros

If you find yourself on a good unit then you'll have a great team backing you up.

    Cons

Unfortunately, even if your home unit is great, you'll sometimes be floated to other units with much less in the way of communication.

    Advice to Management

Find out what the best unit directors are doing and have the others follow their example.
