I have been working at Cartelligent

    Pros

Cartelligent is a really great place to work, and though growing, still has the feel of a small company and the image of a small local business. It is a great place to show up to every day, and people get along well and support eachother. It definitely helps if you enjoy cars, because you talk abou 'em every day, non stop, and have to be somewhat excited to do so. For a capable multitasker and self starter, you... can really succeed in this position.

    Cons

It is tied to the auto industry, so definitely has busy times and really slow times -- you absolutely need to be able to adjust to the changes in the job when this happens. Though there is support, most of one's productivity relies on how quickly they are able to work and manage their workload to move it effeciently, and likely wouldn't work for someone who isn't willing to put in the time to grow their own... business to a comfortable level.

    I worked at Cartelligent full-time

    Pros

Fun work environment where you get to talk about cars all day. Compensation is tied directly to performance, so you can write your own paycheck.

    Cons

The industry as a whole is difficult to work in. Clients don't trust you, business partners lie to you. Cartelligent seeks to be on the buyer's side, but doesn't always practice what it preaches, so ethics can be challenged. Other cons - questionable executive decisions, childish behavior at the top level

    Advice to Management

There are many competitors out there seeking to disrupt the new car buying industry. They are stacked with VC money and software developers. If you seek to continue to be a leader in the brokerage game, you must develop software to compete. They have scalability, where Cartelligent is personnel driven.

I worked at Cartelligent full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The business model is incredible, but difficult to scale. Perks include testing out great new cars!

    Cons

Because the business is difficult to scale, there is a lot of volatility and turnover in terms of staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the steady growth and things will be great!

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Cartelligent full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good people, fun industry. Potential to make money

    Cons

Manager controls leads, which then leads to favoritism. Income potential is entirely in his hands, no matter how hard you work. Draw system is ridiculous-you owe them!

    Advice to Management

Better training, be clear about how pay structure works while still in interview process. Better lead distribution system

    I worked at Cartelligent

    Pros

For me, I really enjoyed my colleagues. For a sales environment, it was very supportive and not overly competitive. If you like cars, which I do, it made work more enjoyable. You have potential to make really good money if you can handle a lot of clients.

    Cons

CEO does not know how to pass the reigns to management. This leads to too much micromanaging which resulted an inefficient use of management and AE's time. AE's were incorrectly typecast on what type of leads they could handle leading to favoritism of certain AE's. Seniority didn't mean much in terms of getting more or even better quality leads than newer AE's. Management wasn't very good at recognizing... milestones or praising AE's.

    Advice to Management

Show more respect and appreciation to your employees. Be appreciative of those who have been in the company for a long time. Micromanaging is detrimental to AE's who have a proven track record of selling and closing.

I worked at Cartelligent for less than a year

    Pros

I recommend using this service as a client, but do your own homework on the market value of both your new and used car. A good amount of the staff is generally good natured and personable. Several former employees have landed good jobs in the industry. Cartelligent is an OK place to get your stripes as a salesperson if you like cars, but don't want to work at a dealership.

    Cons

There are only a handful of ways for Cartelligent to make money. Unlike a dealership that has new and used car sales departments, a finance department, and a service department, this auto broker is only dealing in new and used cars. In 2012, Cartelligent took on sizeable debt, undertook an aggressive expansion mid-year, the expenses of this expansion were underestimated, therefore many cost cuts and layoffs were... a result. These underlying issues were not transparent to the staff. Those who were layed off recieved no severance, some had only been there a matter of weeks.

    Advice to Management

The ratio of managers to employees is out of proportion. Cartelligent is a top heavy organization. Expanding to LA instead of fleshing out the local market was one example of the strategic missteps that plague Cartelligent. Next time Cartelligent wants to expand, they should have a clear and sustainable plan.

    Pros

-Great coworkers and everyone is there to help you and set you up -Easy parking for people with cars -Dog friendly office -Monday through Friday (mostly)

    Cons

-The amount of money you make in the first year is not necessarily what they tell you it is in the interview process, most people at the company seem much lower apart from the seniors -Commission Only -Employee morale seems low -HR is a mess. There is one person doing the bare minimum and she does a poor job at keeping the place organized and efficient. -Poorly organized on-boarding (partially HR's... fault) -Managers seem clueless about how AE's make money, try to have us focus on client satisfaction over making any money -Old computers, we are running Windows 7 desktops. Even though they say you can work from home in the interviews, you would need your own computer to do so -Laggy internet and throttled websites makes me feel like I'm in a 1999 middle school -Having to work occasional Saturday's from 9am to 1pm is a bit of a drag -Inefficient trade process for clients makes it a hard sell and it's where most of the money is for AE's -Office is dated and poorly laid out -"Snack tree" is not a good amenity

    Advice to Management

Please update your company to the standards expected by 2019 Bay Area companies. You cannot be commission only these days and amenities may help keep people longer (a "snack tree" is a sad amenity). You will need to update your practices to survive with a younger employee base coming in.

    Pros

Co-workers create a fun work atmosphere. Benefits are good.

    Cons

It starts at the top with an owner who suffers from Aspergers and is a micro-manager and instructs his management team to do the same. They breathe down your neck and what every move you make by reading your emails, listening to phone calls and projecting what horrible thing they think you "might" do! They play favorites...BIG time. If you are liked by management, you are hand fed accounts and business. If not,... they choke you out. Also, the workplace is an HR nightmare. So many inappropiate things going on on a daily basis.

    Advice to Management

Make the owner/CEO step down or sell the business and hire a professional CEO to lead the company. They will never get to the next level unless that happens.

    I worked at Cartelligent full-time

    Pros

New cars, Sausalito office location, Helpful Co-workers

    Cons

The C-Suite is totally out of touch with the customer and the business. The owner/CEO calls meetings to talk a big game, and then spends all the time in between meetings undermining his stated goals with constant micro-managing. The meetings and message are laughable. It's like someone told them to have meetings but no one told him what to say in the meetings. New staff has no future career growth. Each job... is heavily independent and does not easily grow into another role. The middle managers try hard to keep the team focused, but they can only do so much when the senior leadership doesn't have a direction. I feel bad for them. The interview process was filled with talk of growth and an unlimited compensation plan, what a joke. Since they opened their Orange County office in 2012 they haven't opened up any new offices. I also heard that leads had been flat or declining for the past few years from the senior account executives. The marketing function and my limited interactions with them gave me zero confidence that they know how to get leads for the sales team. Apparently this has been going on for years. They simply rely on the same pool of returning clients coming back year after year. After joining the company I found out that their San Diego and Los Angeles offices are nothing more than a rented address in one of those WeWork spaces. They don't even have staff there! How can you call that 'growth'? The Account Executive is responsible for EVERYTHING getting done even though you are forced to use other departments in the process, but If another department makes a mistake it will come out of your commission check, not theirs.

    Advice to Management

Show some consistency. If you are selling 'growth' to new hires you better have already figured out how to 'grow' your company. Until the CEO can demonstrate leadership and consistency this organization is doomed to constantly be in 'start-up'/failure mode, even though they've been doing this for 18 years.
