    I worked at Carter Lumber

    Pros

They will pay you the minimum amount that they possibly can as long as you show up, keep quiet, and do what you're told.

    Cons

They lie and they don't care about their employees. Management shows obvious inadequecies in planning and strategy. When they moved into this region they decided to open up a millworks operation, so they hired a bunch of door builders away from a competitor promising $1/hr more than they were currently making. A couple of months later they decided to move the operation to another location. They subsequently fired all...

    Advice to Management

You have the opportunity to enrich the lives of 30+ families at this one location. No telling how many people you can reach throughout your whole organization. It's a big responsibility. It is possible to make your margins and create a fulfilling workplace, it just takes a little more work.

I have been working at Carter Lumber full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not likely to go under anytime soon, but you won't see the benefit as it lines someone else's pockets, but you will have a job.

    Cons

Pay, PTO, no raises, benefits. Before the holidays the entirety of HR was fired, an officer walked out the door a month before that, none of them were replaced. The vacation package is worse now than during the recession.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the field, they are your direct line with customers.

I have been working at Carter Lumber full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The only things I can think of the that you get plenty of overtime. And also the days go by quick.

    Cons

All the Truc are very outdated it's embarrassing pulling up to job sites and the people laugh because the truck looks like crap. They don't pay you for the work you have to do. There's to much to list. You don't want to work here.

    Advice to Management

Actually care about your employees or they won't stay.

I worked at Carter Lumber full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lower level coworkers are generally decent folks.

    Cons

I've been to most of their Michigan and Ohio locations as a customer, supplier and employee, they all seem to be the same. First and foremost, the management staff are the worst part. They sometimes pretend to care, but their actions don't reflect that at all. When I was employed there, they fired three new guys, two for very minor infractions, and one who was a veteran with minor ptsd issues. There is minimal professionalism...

    Advice to Management

Treat your people better. Most of your employees are on a first name basis with your customers. When your people don't hate their job, they treat the customer better. When the customer gets taken care of , they buy more and provide word-of-mouth advertising. Which will increase the bottom line you care so much about.
