I have been working at Carter Machinery full-time

    Pros

Nice work environment, good benefits and salary.

    Cons

Work/life balance is a bit off. Culture is old-fashioned. No flex-time or work from home opportunities, which is important if you've got a family with young children.

    Advice to Management

Management should consider allowing employees to manage their own time. This would include allowing employees to work from home occasionally. This is the norm in today's workplace, and a little trust in employees goes a long way. Employee success should be judged based on output of quality work, not how many hours they are in the office.

I worked at Carter Machinery (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are the hardest working you will find anywhere. Benefits of company are really good.

    Cons

Management is weak. Do not appreciate employees efforts. Seem to want to replace the dedicated older employees with cheaper, younger employees

    Advice to Management

Treat your dedicated, loyal employees with respect. Pay them accordingly. Don't terminate your employees are cause them to quit by replacing them with younger employees who you can pay less money to, but know nothing about the business. Especially don't have them take the older employees jobs after they train and teach the younger ones all they know about the business then you terminate or make your dedicated, older employees feel like they need to leave. Also remember folks have a family as well. It's not all about the job to all folks.

I worked at Carter Machinery (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Day hours. Good health benefits.

    Cons

No training. Extremely prejudiced organization. Not welcome if you are not friend or family member of someone who works there already. Very unprofessional work environment, witnessed very discriminatory and abusive language from Shop foreman Richard. and manager Jeremy towards shop employees, especially towards young shipper employees

    Advice to Management

Clean house in used parts department. You are setting yourself up for a future lawsuit if not. Catepillar is a great and strong company, unfortunately your franchise is not representative of the brand. Also, discontinue use of Premier Castings out of Kansas. Very questionable business practices performed with driver and parts management team.

I have been working at Carter Machinery full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, paid time off. Most of the newer employees are awesome to work with, some of the seasoned crew is as well.

    Cons

Very old school ideals and systems. Open door policy isn't really open door or open minded for that matter. Little to no teamwork. Limited room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Be open minded to and embrace change. What worked 30 years ago may not now. Hire official trainers who can invest time in each new person who comes through the door so the training is consistent. Instate a policy and procedures manual and hold employees accountable for not adhering too them. Micromanaging doesn't work.
