I worked at Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They have a ton of 911 contracts.

    Cons

Employees are treated awfully. I understand that this is private EMS, but there are a lot of companies out there that treat employees a lot better. Insurance is expensive for the policy that exists. Pay is ATROCIOUS.

    Advice to Management

The management here does not listen to field employees. They also don't pay attention to the fact that employees are dropping like flies. People are leaving here to either make more money or because they are tired of being treated like garbage. Throwing in a stipend doesn't compensate for the fact that base pay is one of the lowest out there. Late calls are part of the industry, everyone knows that. BUT late calls should not be transfers, only 911 calls. The fact that people are getting out, sometimes two hours late, because of a transfer is ridiculous. They put too much emphasis on transfers, leaving even a single truck to cover multiple cities while trucks are still being sent to transfers. If Cataldo showed some compassion and care for their employees then they wouldn't be in the situation they're in now. They're exhausted, burnt out, and unhappy. Pay and benefits suck. I don't see this company running much longer with the shortage of staff and the reluctance by management to fix the issues.

I have been working at Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Due to extreme staffing shortages at Cataldo, 911 shifts are available to even the newest employees. There are also some great senior paramedics and EMTs, who you can learn a lot from.

    Cons

Literally hate every single day of my life working for this joke of a company. The Cataldo family only cares about profit, and all of the employees are suffering because of it. When I started at this company years ago, nearly all ALS shifts were staffed. Now the company struggles to fill even the best 911 shifts. Most days you don't know if you have relief until an hour before your shift ends. As a paramedic, be prepared to get out late nearly every shift. On the BLS side of things it is even worse. Most BLS are out non-stop for their entire 24 hour shifts. No chance to sleep or see the base. By the way the pay difference between new and experienced clinicians is only like $5. No opportunity for advancement. Most of the supervisors are lazy and burnt out too.

    "Great Coworkers, Low Pay"

I have been working at Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. part-time

    Pros

-Excellent people (obviously there are exceptions, but on average).
-Great for part-time if you have another job
-Scheduling tends to be flexible due to the scarcity of EMTs, so as long as you are comfortable making deals you can set your own schedule.
-Easy "Impact" shifts for a stipend bonus ($19 fresh EMTB)

    Cons

-Low pay on non-Impact shifts, even if you do largely the same thing. $14 starting EMT-B.
-Lots of transports (dialysis if you are in Sommerville, BI to BI if you are in Needham), you rarely get a break
-Can get screwed over by dispatch by being sent on an LD near end of shift.
-Typical private EMS problems, as well.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay in general, but in particular, attach a pay raise to BLS transport shifts

I have been working at Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good working environment and people to support the growth and development of your skills if you are just getting into EMS.

You can move up the company quickly but that growth is limited.

There is high call volume, so you will have ample opportunity to use and practice your skills.

    Cons

More of the latter, can be hectic and so busy you get held over and don't have time to eat. That's not unusual in EMS, but it can get really busy quickly.

    Advice to Management

EMS pay in general isn't too great anywhere. But given how big the company has become I hope that management looks into raising that standard of pay to improve employee quality of life. Look into the hours your employees clocking in for overtime.
