I worked at Catalent Pharma full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent exposure for junior project managers of contract manufacturing. You will learn five years of experience in 18 months. Good stepping stone for those wanting to transition into pharmaceutical project management.

    Cons

Sink or swim environment. Extremely under resourced; only two or three people on a project team (a project manager and a process engineer) everything else is a shared service (quality, sterility, regulatory, etc...). You will average 55-60hr weeks as a project manager which is why you will learn so much. Project manager has all the responsibility and none of the authority. Very, very, very conservative change control attitude. Very stressful if you want to only work 40 hour weeks. Silo mentality. High attrition rate. Lots of time spent retraining new hires that leave. Pass the buck attitude, lack of ownership. Upper management that has stayed cares most about their bonuses and new cars. Favoritism and nepotism run rampant and things only get done for those who scream the loudest. Poorly organized logistically. Unrealistic expectations. Zero work/life balance. Everyone is always crabby because they are overloaded with work. Don't work here if you have kids.

    Advice to Management

Creating a lean environment doesn't mean making one employee do the work of three. Make your processes awesome so one person can do it.

I have been working at Catalent Pharma full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the management I have dealt with are great, co-workers are great, busy with lots of work and seem to promote from within.

    Cons

Health insurance is not very good, 401K match is average, time off is better than average. You get a certain amount of days/year and if you are sick or going out of town they all are used the same. No separate sick leave which is fine if you are like me and in good health.

    Advice to Management

Most of management seems good there are some bad ones but, like any company, they don't do anything about the bad ones.

I worked at Catalent Pharma full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Possibly gain experience in the pharmaceutical field if I had to put a pro down at all. There are a few decent people that work hard, and are good human beings who genuinely care about others, and the job they do.

    Cons

Very poor training that ties into too many people fighting over whats the day to day priority so you never have a chance to learn anything. Its so big a problem, the management team jokes about it as if its funny! Management will intentionally lie to keep the ship afloat/keep temps from leaving until they find out truths. The "scientists" (just people with a basic lab degree in many cases) do none of the work at all! They don't even know how to run a most of the machines, but expect the operators to do all the work, but the "scientists" always take the credit (esp bonuses, while the operators hardly get any recognition). The pay is just terrible compared to doing the same thing at other places around the area, and if you ask for a raise, managers asks to see better offer letters as proof BEFORE he will pay you what you should ALREADY be getting. Some temp was actually offered pay lower than he made currently to become a company employee as apposed as being a temp. The supervisors are continually/intentionally dishonest about how long to go from temporary to permanent. Not to mention some supervisors there have a tendency protect people they used to work with at past companies, or employees they like, while putting it to those they dislike. This Catalent location allows everyone but operators listen to headphones all day, play on Facebook, look for cars on websites, shop online all the while threatening to write you up if you are 5 min late from lunch. Look into high turnover rate there, and why so NUMEROUS temp agencies try to fill the ranks. Don't waste your time, its not worth it.

    Advice to Management

When you know superiors has a addictions of any nature that bleed over into work, and your employees tell you that the certain supervisors have asked for cash loans from several subordinates, has stolen lunches, or they are known disappearance during shift for hours at a time, id suggest you really do act and not retaliate against those employees for "whistle blowing". Stop being dishonest to employees, and pay better so you have less turnover. Train your supervisors to talk to others who works there with a little respect, not belittle them or CUT THEM OFF then they are try to explain things. Make your bottom level supervisors actual train at tasks so they know what they are doing when they sign real documents that the FDA regulates, and not have management steal company paychecks as they are online all day, or texting personal messages outside the company nonstop. If you look at the company reviews, you will see two things that stick out repeatedly, bad supervision/management complaints, and the "we are sorry for your bad experience" but do not correct these issues.

    Pros

A good stepping stone to get into the industry

Some really great people working here. Good stepping stone into the pharma and biotech industry, get to see what goes on behind the scenes with drug development.

    Cons

Low pay, mediocre benefits, absolutely no training, weak leadership, company cares more about revenue and costs than customer satisfaction and patient safety. Some managers and directors won't allow you to join their teams because they have personal bias against you.

Strong internal talents get overlooked for growth, only for someone externally (with not a whole lot of experience in operations, and not used to working in a fast paced environment) to be hired-- internal talents are used to plug in holes.

The turnover rate is outrageous, training is weak at best, and management either doesn't have the time to spend time on your development or just doesn't care.

The whole organization needs a readjustment and it starts all the way up with the CEO and his entourage of failures.

    Advice to Management

Be professional, be actual leaders, value your employees, and try to give your strong talents plenty of opportunity for development for their career goals instead of trying to use them to meet your own goals so you can get your fat bonus checks.
