I worked at Catamaran full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great healthcare benefits. Fair pay.

    Cons

Always very stressful days, even worse between January-March when there was mandatory overtime. Pay was decent but most of the time would nowhere near compensate for how stressful the work was. Employees who were good at their job were "rewarded" by getting trained in more areas and therefore took far more/more challenging phone calls than others. A lot of employees who had been there quite a while coasted along doing the bare minimum and got away with it.

    Advice to Management

Don't let harder working employees feel like they're being punished for doing well and get more work than others. Even though you're recognizing their accomplishments you're also being unfair to them by doing so.

I worked at Catamaran full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, great bonus potential, flexible work arrangements

    Cons

Terrible management, operational gridlock. Too much growth in a short period of time, and multiple mergers and acquisitions have made Catamaran (now Optum Rx) a difficult place to work. The focus used to be on service to the client and members, and has moved to increasing revenue at all costs (even if that means upsetting your clients). The culture of the company has become unrecognizable compared to what it once was. Lots of backstabbing, no accountability, poor management, and promotion of those who brown nose rather than exemplify true leadership skills.

    Advice to Management

Quit berating employees and putting them on "performance improvement plans" as a way to get rid of people. Instead, develop your people and support them. Take ownership for the operational issues, don't use your employees as scapegoats.

I worked at Catamaran (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pay is decent
    Location is nice
    Clean building

    Cons

HORRIBLE! There is such a high turnover because of how horrible this place is. They try to cram 6 weeks of "training" into 2-3. Force you to answer phone calls but give you no proper training or when asked for help given an attitude. Although it's supposedly busy, "leadership" & "management" have time to sit around and literally spy on you all day. Not allowed to use the bathroom for more than 5 minutes. No one truly cares about their members and cancel authorizations instead of following up. No one knows what they're doing which leads to frustrated and upset members and clients. You are only allowed to place a call on hold for 1 minute at a time but if someone asks to speak to a manager it's ok to leave them on hold for 45 minutes! Save yourself don't even apply. There's a reason why they're always hiring & require mandatory overtime. The only ones that stick around are desperate for a job.

    Advice to Management

Better training!! Less micromanaging! If you have time to time how long "bathroom" breaks are you have time to take some phone calls! Worst place ever.
