I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Manage weld, assembly, machining, and metrology inspection. A multifaceted group allows for a broader knowledge base. This role will help in a role as a Quality Manager because it will give you a good understanding of the entire inspection and quality process.

    Cons

Coverage area is very large so a lot of time is spent getting from one place to another. More then 30 direct reports. This does not allow for enough one on one interactions.

I have been working at Caterpillar as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

flexible schedule, AC office area, people are friendly.

    Cons

CAT do not hire contracts, I have been working for 2 years and still contact. No paid vacation, No personal days, No paid holidays. In announcements they call CAT employees first and then contracts that makes you feel the disrespect. When they take team pictures, contracts do not get invitation to participate and be with the team.

    Advice to Management

Think more about the contracts and their motivation, not doing that will decrease the courage to do better when there is no opportunity to get hired. I started with high momentum to do better day after day, but when I realized that there is chance to get hired, this pushed me way back and demotivated me. I have a friend in design team spent 6 years contract.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are very few anymore to list, but vacation time seems to be decent if you are with company for long time.

    Cons

Everything is terrible at CAT anymore. You can't even get a good severance to leave. I would not recommend this as a place to work.

    Advice to Management

If you like the following CAT is a wonderful place to work.

    - politics in all that you do to accomplish nothing
    - constant uncertainty, layoffs, and unemployment
    - low and unacceptable severance amounts
    - no work life balance
    - double talk out of both sides of their mouth
    - no growth and development
    - lack of promotions and opportunities
    - executive staff sucking the place dry while you go without
    - year over year reduction in benefits
    - lack of bonuses
    - wage inequality
