I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pays well, good mobility for aggressive people, management is looking to improve morale after last year's bloodbath.

    Cons

Still a staff and slash company, following the market closely.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what our employees and their talent is worth. We have a lot of product knowledge tied up in them. On every downturn a lot of them are being let go, and many of them of are now working for our competitors.

Worked with some wonderful individuals and had the opportunity to learn a lot of new tools and technologies.

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. I don't get treated like an intern (most of the time). I get to contribute meaningfully every day.
    2. Pay is good. Roughly $23/hr
    3. They gave us tours to all of their local facilities
    4. Supervisors set up frequent 1-on-1 meetings with workers. There is good communication throughout

    Cons

    1. Too many different software packages to learn --> steep learning curve
    2. Corporate Web Security is excessive at times; I'm a software developer and I shouldn't have to go through an approval process to get four hours of temporary admin rights.
    3. Overpriced cafeteria

    Advice to Management

Please don't force us to use HPQC to document testing. It is an outdated software package. Find a better solution.

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

If you show you are a valuable asset, they will treat you as one

    Cons

You must prove your competence before they give you important projects to work on

    Advice to Management

Take more risks on interns, throw them on a team that is working on challenging projects and see if they can handle it

I worked at Caterpillar as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

They really cared about finding the right job for me, and there were plenty of opportunities for me to learn new programs and develop skills. There definitely was a sense of family and community. The compensation even as a corporate intern was also really nice.

    Cons

It can sometimes get pretty disorganized in such a large company. Divisions each have their own way of organizing information. It's more of a traditional workplace, so don't expect sleeping pods or anything that Silicon Valley is doing. Most employees seem to either really love working at CAT, or are trying to find other jobs.

    Advice to Management

I'd spend more time working on the learning center, because when I had some free and was looking for additional things to learn, it was hard navigating CLMS and trying to find classes or online courses that were relevant to what I wanted to learn. There seemed to be a larger emphasis on soft skills rather than technical skills.

-Many opportunities to network with other interns, co-workers and leadership.

    Cons

-Pay is bad compared to other accounting internships.
-A lot of change is going around and it makes it hard for interns to follow all of these changes
