I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good base salary. Don't expect any raises or bonuses with the current environment.
    Fellow employees.

    Cons

Current restructuring results in complete lack of job security. People are being let go within the first year of being hired. Some contract workers have lost jobs within months of employment. Most people I know are actively searching elsewhere or are at least developing a viable plan B.

    Advice to Management

Value the workers and work environment.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Absolutely nothing, company is dying. Vision 2020 should be 20 billion by 2020, they are on track for that target!

    Cons

Management - no idea on what groups are doing what so we have tons of duplication of efforts.

Pay - frozen, costs go up, inflation is a thing and pay remains constant. Bonus? The "average" bonus is calculated into their competitive salary package but has been horrible over the last decade if you average it out, don't believe in a 1.0 STIP.

Talent - we lost some of our best employees because they saw what was coming, with them their knowledge and dedication was gone. We are trying to "do more with less" which is leading to quality issues, this isn't the Caterpillar I remember hearing about 20 years ago.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice. You ran the ship into the iceberg, at least go down with the ship with dignity.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No expectations to do anything but look busy, which is perfect for lazy people who want a decent paycheck until they are fired usually between Thanksgiving and Christmas!

    Cons

Tirelessly trying to persuade management to innovate, only to be told, "That's a great idea, but we don't want to change anything."

    Advice to Management

Stop using the most outdated and inefficient email system! Lotus Notes is an awful program.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Caterpillar team is committed to achieving goals. Cross functional cooperation is wonderful. Benefits are average to better than average.

    Cons

Executives lack any true direction or vision. Most now are inexperienced and dreamers. Dangerous and uncertain times lie ahead for the company. Low end tech used to run the day to day business

    Advice to Management

Stop saying that the company is committed to anything. Every time it's said the commitment is broken. The Cat brand internally is worthless. Actions speak louder than words.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time

    Pros

There are none at this time.

    Cons

Caterpillar is constantly laying off employees for what they say is a lack of profits.
They are moving work into Mexico to help cover cost.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay, able to meet numerous people.

    Cons

Too top heavy. Too many managers not enough worker bees. Not a lot of room for improvement on the career front when you are not favored.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Typical clean environment in the office. Each role narrowly defined and focused, could be something good for some individual if suited.

    Cons

Revenue has been on the slide for 4 years now, and with the main customer industries in the downturn, Cat may not be the best company to the in right now.

    Advice to Management

Vision of Cat always sounds logiical and make sense and correct.. it is the interpretation by the management and the willingness to see through the execution that could be the challenge.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you have only a high school education and nothing else you will be kept because they are cutting experience and higher paid employees.

    Cons

College education means nothing to them.

    Advice to Management

Stop advancing people that have no business managing people.
