I worked at Caterpillar as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have nothing good to say about this company. Definitely not what it was 4 decades ago.

    Cons

Treats contractors like 2nd class citizens, stuffy, negative atmosphere. Trying to improve profit per share by reducing contractor compensation, contractors get laird off some time in 4th qtr every year.

  3. "Confused"

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    Good pay and good benefits
    Clean facility
    Controlled envirment
    Work is not to hard
They provid uniforms so you don't have to wear you own cloths

    Cons

    No integrity
Upper management will lye to your face
They promote safety but don't practice it.
If you report a safety issue they ignore you and if someone gets hurt they blame that person.
Only after someone gets hurt do they address the issue.
Upper management are from the north and think the people in the south are stupid and treat them like they are by lying and thinking they stupid enough not to see thru there lies

    Advice to Management

    Practice what you preach.
    Stop lying to employees
Just because your from the North doesn't mean the people in the South are stupid
If you want to preach integrity you need to have some.

    I worked at Caterpillar full-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule, travel, customer interaction, large company so very little risk to have to do much outside your job role.

    Cons

Highly competitive environment with several people willing to step on you. As a woman, the environment is not friendly and have to put up with a lot of harassment.

    Advice to Management

It's a good old boys club, it's who you have as your mentor that will bring you through the organization.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Longevity as a company, benefits, some really great people work there.

    Cons

Management looks out for only themselves and their buddies. They won't get out of their own way. They kill any culture that isn't what Peoria has always done. They move people around without posting jobs (not meaning normal promotions).

    Advice to Management

The new Chief HR Officer has some big tasks ahead. She needs to clean house and look at those in key roles and figure out how in the world they got there especially those with serious skeletons in their closets. You need to really look at those leading in higher level roles because they are sitting feet up while it's burning all around them and they could care less. As long as they get to retirement in 3-5 years they don't care about who they push around.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The co-workers are very efficient and friendly

    Cons

CAT says their care about their people but when management screws up those valued employees get the door.

    Advice to Management

If you value your employees act like it. They are not cannon fodder when the CEO is a idiot

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good pay for the area.

    Cons

Career Planning? Why bother! Give, push, and fight for the customer or to do things right - nope? High performers were let go fall 2016 with only explanation of "Sorry, we have no place for you in the company" during a hostile takeover of the product development division. 8 months later they disband the new merged division. Now voluntary attrition of those left seeing what happened around them has been increasing.

    Advice to Management

You are only managers pushing papers and meeting spreadsheet budget numbers to say "Yes" to the boss above you. NOT leaders, not visionary, not a coach, not a mentor, not innovative, not inspiring.

    Advice to Management

    Stop the nepotism and favoritism.
