    Pros

good benefits get to travel sometime

    Cons

horrible worker! Management only show respect to their favorite worker. lay off all of the hard worker and keep the one who has family that is either engineer, quality, or a team lead! unless you know how to kiss... I suggest that you don't waste your time!

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time

    Pros

Huge diversity of businesses, roles, and jobs. Global company. Opportunity to build a breadth of experience building your career.

    Cons

For last 5 - 8 years, corporation has been run by an accountant. The paternalistic company that employees supported because Cat / Cat leadership supported them is gone. Run by numbers. Employees are fearful.

    Advice to Management

You have poisoned the well of of employee good will. Employees are not another expendable asset akin machinery. Work on the near impossible goal of giving leaders, particular at mid and low-level, the confidence, support and tools they need to champion their workers.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay higher than average and bonus in good years is very good. They finally have an HSA healthcare option in 2017.

    Cons

Stockholder dividend payment and stock price drives company strategy much more than customer benefits or employee retention. Constantly changing budgets make management of projects tremendously difficult and drives inefficiencies that don't seem to be recognized by upper management.

    Advice to Management

Learn to listen to employees. Rethink strategies to be long term instead of short term. Empowered employees create value for customers which result in higher sales and satisfaction, therefore impacting sales and company profit.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay for the central IL area. Good benefits, education assistance after first year, matching 401k.

    Cons

Many managers, few leaders. Lack of care from higher level management. Promotions based more on "who you know" not merit or consistently exceptional performance.

    Advice to Management

Remember where you came from -- managers have not always been managers, but seem to forget that when they start making so much money. Caterpillar has few managers that are true leaders. Too many layers to get movement on action items, ideas and improvements. Management seems apprehensive to make decisions because if they don't they can't be blamed for a possible bad decision. Work climate is dreadful on a daily basis. Top management seemingly disregards the larger workforce, the ones actually doing the work, when making decisions.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good, but benefits aren't what they once were, as they try to curb healthcare costs. Good work-life balance for most roles.

    Cons

Layoffs layoffs layoffs, then more layoffs. They are never ending, and while everyone left takes on more work to cover for those laid off, revenue continues to decline (down >40% over the past 4+ years), the executive office continues to reward themselves with raises. It's disgusting and demoralizing, and has many of those still left looking elsewhere for work.

    Advice to Management

Figure out your strategy, communicate it to employees, and stick with it.

Working from home (telecommute) and flexibility in your schedule with working hours

    Cons

Your a number, and company will not care during a down turn in the economy on letting you go. If and when you leave, you are not able to work for a supplier, agency for up to 6 months due to legal reasons which makes finding a job that much harder.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Well - what can you say ..... They promise a lot / deliver a little. In 2015 they announced laying off 20,000 ..... They did keep their word about that !!! And that was white collar jobs !!! They promised to rebuild Corp HQ - reneged on that one. They started into the Heavy truck business - reneged on that (worst built truck - ever) . They promised to stay in Peoria - reneged on that one. The list is to long....
One thing - they adhere to a Values code. Kudos on that .... HR is pretty darn good!!!!

    Cons

Absolutely - horrible top management ! They manage to their bonuses !!! Oberhelman is a crook !!! Check out their annual bonuses when the company was headed down the tubes. It will make you sick. Largely all Engineers - with no people skills - they all jus check boxes for the next job. And extremely cliquish ----
And The Board .... All just clipping their huge checks ---- just Donkey nodding to CEO

    Advice to Management

Um - worked there 13 years .... Stay in touch with those lucky enough to still be needed - they are doing 3 people's jobs without financial compensation. While management politics and looks for next nest to jump into..... They / middle management HATE it there.
