I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Highly competitive environment, deep knowledge in engineering, best products in their market, flex work policy and opportunities to move around

    Cons

Management extremely focused on OPACC and shareholders rather than customers and employees. Company is too susceptible to market commodities cycle

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, after all employees are the biggest single group of shareholders!

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, culture and compensation structure. When business booms, incentive bonuses tend to follow.

    Cons

Very little executive/mid-level management concern for the impact of restructuring on the people affected. Significant shifting/cutting of the workforce as manufacturing footprints are consolidated. Shareholder reward takes precedence over talent retention and employee quality of life.

    Advice to Management

Look further down the road than next years bottom line. Pay closer attention to the value of that lost talent that's being picked up by the competition. Career opportunities were amazing, and the company could be trusted to reward loyalty in return. Today, the climate is riddled with uncertainty.

I worked at Caterpillar as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Safety first, great leadership, very helpful. Allowed me as an intern to move around the different jobs from assembly, manufacturing engineer, section manager support, quality assurance technician. Great human resources employees.

    Cons

I started as a highschool intern doing assembly for CAT and then started moving around within nee positions but as a technical college intern I was paid less than a university student. Not much room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the assemblers when it comes to problems at how, they look up to you to comfort them.

I worked at Caterpillar as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exposure to different areas in Caterpillar, many training opportunities, networking, informational sessions with full-time employees, mentorship during internship, and meaningful projects to work on as an intern

    Cons

Caterpillar was laying off many full-time employees in 2016--including my supervisor at the time. Low morale due to uncertainty of job security for many full-time employees.

I interviewed for a full-time position, but they had no jobs to offer me due to their poor performance in 2016.
