I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Strong values, diverse, committed to performance, many opportunities, most middle to senior managers "get it." Tough decisions made in a tough market.

    Cons

Sometimes 99 to 1 ends up as a tie, hard to work around those that "don't get it," Veto power is too prevalent. Difficult on boarding process for mid-career hires.

    Pros

They are trying to help give people more reason to work here. However, most of the time it falls short.

    Cons

Most of the old benefits like tuition assistance, cheap healthcare, fringe benefits and general pride have been stripped away.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Great experience, especially with in-source work coming in
-Very supportive environment with your peers
-Shop Floor folks are easy to work with as long as you treat them with respect
-Good compensation for the work that I do
-Good at working on recognizing employees who make improvements, especially shop floor employees
-Cool product to work with, a lot of opportunity to start your own projects and get involved if you have initiative (just don't try to spend too much money on them)
    -Great 401(k)
-Bonus is great (if you get it that year)

    Cons

-Engineering seems separated with manufacturing and there always seems to be confusion between the two
    -Cyclic Business
-Wants to be a "technology" company, yet has a hard time getting there, outsourcing IT operations
-Lack of on site IT Support
-Too caught up in "corporate culture" to retain talent when you have the chance, especially in more "remote" manufacturing locations
-Lack of communication between different manufacturing operations

    Advice to Management

-Keep everyone updated of the corporate and company goals, provide how their work directly links up to those goals and STIP factors.
-Go out on a limb for your employees in order to retain and grow them.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are competitive.

    Cons

Job security in non-existent. Women don't have the same opportunities as men. The "old school" mentality is still very much alive in the leadership team of the company. Very adverse to change.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees. We aren't just a number. If you want to transition job functions to other countries and have current employees train their replacements then make sure those training their replacements are taken care of in the end.

I have been working at Caterpillar (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some really solid technical people still work here, however, they are quickly being lost

    Cons

Change or things will only get worse...more people will leave

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting people to manager positions who have no people skills

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are very few anymore to list, but vacation time seems to be decent if you are with company for long time.

    Cons

Everything is terrible at CAT anymore. You can't even get a good severance to leave. I would not recommend this as a place to work.

    Advice to Management

If you like the following CAT is a wonderful place to work.

    - politics in all that you do to accomplish nothing
    - constant uncertainty, layoffs, and unemployment
    - low and unacceptable severance amounts
    - no work life balance
    - double talk out of both sides of their mouth
    - no growth and development
    - lack of promotions and opportunities
    - executive staff sucking the place dry while you go without
    - year over year reduction in benefits
    - lack of bonuses
    - wage inequality
