I have been working at Catholic Community Services of Western WA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful mission, great management, is very rewarding to see people recover, team focus, potlucks, flexible schedule, downtown Olympia, cultural competence, good values.

    Cons

Work life balance can be difficult in this line of work in general and within this agency. Clinicians are on call (to families and staff) and schedules vary depending on family and team availabilities. For example you may have a 7am team meeting at a school, a 11am staffing, 3pm appointment and a 6pm appointment. This is manageable but your day is spread out. Also paperwork can be a slog at times.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, keep supporting your staff and the families they serve. Thank you for providing us with opportunities to further our own development. Thank you for creating a very special work culture.

I worked at Catholic Community Services of Western WA full-time

    Pros

The salary is the highest I have seen in community mental health.

    Cons

You work above and beyond your salary. The culture is not open to new ideas and Supervisors are unaware of how to listen well or be open to new ideas. The turn over is high despite the high pay due to an inability for management to listen to the needs of its therapists.

    Advice to Management

It is possible that there is a better way to do therapy and being open to your counselors not just your supervisors would be a great place to start. Start thinking like the corporate world and stop just looking in house for advice. Honestly be open to idea that your program does not have the corner on the market and be curious as to why people still leave a great paying job. Make sure your supervisors are kind and are self aware of their own bias. Being in crisis work for 10+ years does not make you a good therapist. It could make you more unhealthy due to secondary trauma and this program seems to be an enactment of those traumas. Analyze that and have your supervisors do their own therapeutic work.

I worked at Catholic Community Services of Western WA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good pay and flexible hours

    Cons

The company emphasizes it's wanting-ness to eradicate racism and other oppressive patriarchal systems, all while being run by white men and women. I have seen changes in contracts, placements, and harmful changes to documents to gain more federal money. The company is greedy and on a direct service level, families are not being heard or valued. The lower positions who mind you are the closest representation of people we serve are devalued and are treated like the families served. Which leads me to they treatment of peoples served. The staff are mostly white and are people without any lived experience that would help them serve clients in a holistic and graceful way. Families and people served by this company are therein treated through a patriarchal lens so white people can feel better about themselves for creating such inequity and oppression in the first place. Catholic Community Services do far more harm and continue the cycles of oppression so poor and sick people can keep coming back, so these people can feel better about themselves. It does no justice to the cause.

    Advice to Management

Hire new management that are involved in advocacy and social justice. This would help your company follow through on their promise.

I worked at Catholic Community Services of Western WA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working with people the most in need. The mission to help the people who most need it is a blessing. It was also a multi-million dollar government contract, so the motivation to keep the system broken is awfully strong.

    Cons

Management discriminates against women and older workers. Women are not provided with full health care by this employer. Management has directed staff specifically to hire younger workers. The director wants staff to speak up on behalf of our clients but not ourselves. When you speak the truth about discrimination within the agency, the upper management will label you a problem and will find reasons to fire you.

    Advice to Management

Retire - you’re discriminatory practices should have died with the dinosaurs. Let staff and clients choose their own birth control options with more choices for health insurance without management’s approval.

I worked at Catholic Community Services of Western WA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, friendly co-workers, good pay, people are genuine and kind for the most part, will do well if you are favored.

    Cons

There is the expectation that staff will go to any place day or night and risk their own safety to help at risk youth and families. Employees are expected to ignore these risks and to not complain. If you voice concerns you are falsely reassured you can handle it and are fine. They keep hiring more supervisors that are unorganized and do not have time to staff clients. There is a huge liability concern with therapists dealing with situations on their own, supervisors are mostly on vacation, in meetings, are most always unavailable when you need them. You have a team of people who get paid whether or not they do their job, many don't care and will say they're too busy. You are on call all the time and they are always short staffed due to high turnover. You are on call several weekends and holidays each year and cannot complain about this either. Vacation time is accrued but can be hard to use. I have had to transport aggressive youth, have been assaulted, have been to shady neighborhoods, have met in homes with guns, weapons, drugs, watch dogs, threats to families, you name it. They pay well but trust me, it's NOT worth it.
