  3. "As small box retail goes, this is a good company to work for. They do require more work and less hours, but good starter"

I worked at Cato full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Small company feel, with that being said, the pay is small company too.

    Cons

Not enough hours, not offering enough pay to part time associates to retain a good staff.

    Advice to Management

Allow managers to higher associates in at a higher rate so that they can get better employees and increase retention.

I worked at Cato full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Semi- Flexible schedule, great colleagues, able to reflect your style with merchandising and displays 20% discount on all merchandise in store and online (clearance and regular price items) great customers with great customer service, great product for women sizes 2- 28 in store, up to size 34 online

    Cons

Pay could be more competitive for all employee levels( worked my way up from sales associate to store manager ), Turnover (usually because of low pay), advancement opportunities slim, after store manager level, technology could be updated even more

    Advice to Management

If you are a Store manager for Cato, be prepared to do a lot of work. It's easier when you have a cohesive team. Be able to delegate task, and this works if you have a good staff. If you do not have a consistent staff that works with you, it will be a struggle, and you can burn yourself out. Keep your store neat and organized, complete plan-o-grams and updates asap. You will also be responsible for cleaning and... maintenance of store ( replace ceiling tiles, florescent lights, minor vacuum repairs like replacing belts, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, mopping, vacuum, etc)

I have been working at Cato full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The benefits are okay, there is opportunity for bonuses, and advancements. Though I wouldn't recommend advancing beyond store manager unless you come into the company above store level.

    Cons

They treat their salaried store managers terribly. There is no gratitude or compensation for making you work over your mandatory 45 hrs/wk. The schedule for a store manager is pretty set in stone unless you use PTO. You only get 1 weekend off a month and if your store is low on staff, they expect you to fill in those shifts. Again with no compensation and typically no help from another store. Very cheap pay for... too much work.

    Advice to Management

Treat your store managers properly. Compensate them if they have to sacrifice extra time to keep the store at it's best. The pay is not worth the headache and the terrible hours especially during the holidays.
