I worked at Cato full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Semi- Flexible schedule, great colleagues, able to reflect your style with merchandising and displays 20% discount on all merchandise in store and online (clearance and regular price items) great customers with great customer service, great product for women sizes 2- 28 in store, up to size 34 online

    Cons

Pay could be more competitive for all employee levels( worked my way up from sales associate to store manager ), Turnover (usually because of low pay), advancement opportunities slim, after store manager level, technology could be updated even more

    Advice to Management

If you are a Store manager for Cato, be prepared to do a lot of work. It's easier when you have a cohesive team. Be able to delegate task, and this works if you have a good staff. If you do not have a consistent staff that works with you, it will be a struggle, and you can burn yourself out. Keep your store neat and organized, complete plan-o-grams and updates asap. You will also be responsible for cleaning and... maintenance of store ( replace ceiling tiles, florescent lights, minor vacuum repairs like replacing belts, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, mopping, vacuum, etc)

I worked at Cato part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nothing is coming to me at this point.

    Cons

Poor management with an obvious lack of education and maturity. Minimum wage. Only knew your schedule one week in advance, which made making plans virtually impossible. Required you to be available at all times in case someone should call out, despite the low pay. You virtually cleaned the entirety of your shifts. Very high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees a competitive wage and you may get the quality of work you require. Hire individuals with education and maturity for management positions.

Store Manager in Saint Louis, MO
    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I worked at Cato for more than 3 years

    Pros

Learned a lot about retail. Loved the actual job, just not the micromanagement.

    Cons

Upper management is disconnected from what really goes on and how the District Managers treat Store Managers. Culture is " do what ya gotta do to get it done but I don't want to know how it gets done." Very low pay compared to the competition.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire District Managers from outside the company who have never been District Managers and don't know policies as well as current Store Managers. And Give them more than 2 weeks training. MAKE them read the whole policy and procedure manual and LP manual and TEST them on it.
