Great company to work for (before DoorDash got ahold of them)

Sep 17, 2021 - Bike Courier in Portland, OR

    Pros

I delivered food on my bike and that seemed to be the best way to do the Job (in Portland, Ore.) For the company the pay was good and it really motivated you to get out and close weekly goals to get bonuses which were pretty good imo.

    Cons

They allowed DoorDash to "merge", pay went way down immediately and you couldn't work anywhere outside of the downtown area (i.e. beaverton, hillsboro) if your on a bike.

    Measly pay, poor driver support

    Pros

    Freedom is the only pro

    Cons

I just feel like overall the company doesn't value the couriers. Countless times I have been forced to drop an order because restaurant was running very late and I knew if I stayed with it then the abysmal "wait pay" would kick in. I would stick with an order if it offered more than a measly $1 for staying with it for 30 minutes. Just ridiculous. Also I feel like the base pays we're lowered to compensate for the company offering peak pay because if anything I'm making less than I was without the peak pay. Often times if you do the math we are making less than minimum wage when accounting for car gas and maintenance. The tipping system is ludicrous. The customer only sees "courier bonus", which honestly most people don't know what a courier is let alone want to give a bonus when they might think the delivery fee is a tip. Just simply putting the words "tip for driver" would increase the rate of tips that come in. Yesterday I had 0 tips from 7 customers. That is just horrible. I like the driving experience, I just don't like the slave wages we are paid in hopes that we get tips to make up for that.

    Good side hustle, very fair

    Pros

I am a courier sometimes on weekends after work. I like that I don't have to work every single weekend if I have plans or something though. They pay fairly, you know what you will make before you start an order and you don't have to hope for the best with customers who may or may not tip but you still can get tips sometimes on top. On busy nights I have made $100 easy in a few hours. Caviar has good restaurants and most of them are nice to us. The orders come to them automatically so you don't have to make the order or pay for it. I like walking in, getting the food, and leaving.

    Cons

Sometimes it isn't busy. I know it's not Caviar's fault but it sucks when we sit a long time with no order. I watch Netflix on my phone and at least I can still make more money than being at home but I wish we had more people who knew about Caviar so they would order all the time. Also customers can only tip before they order. That is weird. They should be able to add a tip after I deliver. They always ask me and I feel awkward. Sometimes restaurants don't pay attention or don't care and it makes me have to wait a long time. Don't they know my time is valuable!? They need to step up their game- it's not hard! I hope Caviar charges the owner for when they pay us extra for waiting.
