I have been working at Cavium full-time

    Pros

    Good company, lot of visibility

    Cons

Very fast paced, repetitive tasks, management doesn't invest on tools for engineers to work on, no work life balance

    Advice to Management

Focus on making tasks efficient for the benefit of longer run rather than getting things done at the moment.

    Pros

Easy to get a lot of responsibility quickly. Most projects are seen to completion so your work will be used by the company.

    Cons

Location is not the most exciting for a recent college graduate. Some organizational issues.

    Advice to Management

Management needs a more realistic view of the engineering effort for product changes and redefinition.

I have been working at Cavium full-time

    Pros

Very smart engineers. Some people who work here are highly distinguished. The opportunities to grow in your career in your chosen role are plenty.

    Cons

Cavium thinks they run a lean ship. They don't, they run a cheap ship. It seems like cheap and lean mean the same. They don't. Cavium claims their compensation is market rate. Perhaps compared to the early 2000s. Their compensation is comprised of RSUs and salary, and the ratio often times is near 60/40 which is risky. They tend to look for a "diamond in the rough" in their hiring practices.

Moreover, they do not fund their support departments adequately. This includes their IT and HR organizations. Engineers here run their own ops which is ludicrous. This is giant waste of valuable engineering time. The IT team needs to be better staffed as this company grows

    Advice to Management

Pay your people the true market rate or risk your stars leaving the company. It will happen in this market. Invest in IT and HR, you're not a start up anymore, behave like a big company.
