Was a very special place to work

Dec 9, 2019 - Manager in Summit, NJ

    Pros

Celgene was a truly amazing place to work. The best place I have worked in my career. Very fast paced and demanding, but if you work hard and are smart you can flourish. Being part of a talented project team bringing treatment for unmet medical needs to market has meant a lot to me

    Cons

It’s already apparent that the big-pharma culture at BMS is not aligned with the agile biotech culture that defined Celgene. It’s turning out to be the case that the same job one person has at Celgene is managed by 5 or more people at BMS. This means a lot of talent will be mapped into positions that minimize their potential. There is a lack of confidence that BMS will value the talent and expertise Celgene employees bring to the table. The majority of the late stage pipeline BMS now owns is thanks to the hard work and dedication of Celgene’s workforce, but BMS is already pushing to fit everything into their model which is alarming. I loved being part of Celgene and am deeply saddened what made it special will likely go away.

    Great company but too political

Mar 28, 2016 - Product Manager in Summit, NJ

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Compensation, culture, smart people, growing organization/energy, multiple products. Restricted stock units! Overall, good culture, energy, and work environment. Lean organization so opportunity to take on more work and learn faster

    Cons

Slowly becoming big pharma/hierarchical. Career progression can be hit or miss depending on political standing within organization. Depends on how much superiors with political capital 'advocate' for you. Some deserving people are passed over for promotions because of favoritism and inconsistency across the organization.

Getting more like a big pharma rather than biotech in recent 2 yrs

Dec 7, 2017 - Scientist in Summit, NJ

    Pros

Stock option. RSU. 401(K) match is similar to any other pharma but in form of com stock. generous health care, prescription drug benefit.

    Cons

Recent 2 years, the company was undergoing tremendous culture change. The management team should know it and prob heard old folks talking quite a bit. In one sentence, Celg is more like 2 big pharma at Kenilworth, NJ (both 10 yr ago and now) rather than a biotech at Summit, NJ 10 yr ago. Go figure out who they are!

    Pros

Successful growing company in a downsizing market. Relatively small compared to big pharma. Full of hard working bright scientists. Pay and benefits are not bad.

    Cons

Growing company without growing resources. No work-life balance. When a successful employee leaves, they hire two less experienced people as replacements. Some managers are openly proud of being the "ax man" in previous big pharma. They like to rule by fear. This works because of the poor pharma environment in NJ. No desire to promote from within. You get ahead by denigrating your direct reports and colleagues.

    Good salary with stock options.

It is losing it's small company feeling and evolving into big pharma. Development opportunities are only for the 'chosen' few making others feel demoralized..

    Pros

Benefits are comparable to other pharmas I've worked in. Lots of light shown on patients.

    Cons

They talk the stock up a lot during offer process but it's only good to those that started here 10 yrs ago. No summer hours or holiday shut down. Culture is turning into big pharma. Favoritism runs rampant through all departments. People get promoted based off popularity vs hard work/talent.
