    Pros

good vacation, good wages, maybe some hope here if oil prices turn around

    Cons

Very poor work/life policies with imposed camp in '18; no progression........career stagnation; poor morale

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Cenovus full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Generous vacation time and bonus structure.

    Cons

Demoralized workforce due to layoffs and continued communication problems. Role change opportunities are stagnant.
Leadership is out of touch with employee morale and thinks the issues are in 'other teams'.

    Advice to Management

Transparency on corporate changes would go a long ways to building trust. Sharing of the company survey results would be appreciated - why are the results a secret?

Yes, we got premium quality resources to develop... that is our strong and diminishing legacy

    Cons

    Top heavy organization
    Too much nepotism
Driven by HR folks - current and previous
Look up the Peter Principle and Bureaucracy. You are likely to read a definition of our company

I have been working at Cenovus (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very generous compensation packages. Young group of people, with a lot of opportunities to try different types of work. Huge focus on hiring young educated people and developing them for future management needs. The company was able to let go of a lot of problematic staff during the 3 rounds of layoffs.

The company has a focussed strategy to develop their 2 key oilsands assets. Despite a renewed focus on low costs, they still value quality over cost in their operations and capital investments. The 2017 Conoco asset purchases essentially doubled the size of the company. If their debt is managed and the price of oil stabalizes for a few years, the company could be in fantastic shape for years to come.

    Cons

Very young (and often inexperienced) management group that lacks much of the leadership skills required to motivate and mentor staff. 3 sets of lay-offs resulted in a lot of skilled (arguably over paid) people being lost, which meant an excessive loss of knoeledge. Reduced staff also resulted in much heavier work loads through 2015-17. And an attitude of "just get it done" is becoming disturbingly pervasive up and down the management chain.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the critics! Quality of management has deteriorated since its split from EnCana.  That company went through significant financial stress, but go look at their company ratings, and how they've managed to maintain such positive reviews!

    Pros

Great vacation, good compensation and benefits, at the team level people generally get along well.

    Cons

What a mess. So many overlapping roles and responsibilities. Bullying still allowed by some leaders. Switch to functional model attempt caused more troubles since it has only been partially implemented. No long- term thinking or plan for what happens when oil sands can't compete on cost or carbon. No true focus on innovation to address that.

    Advice to Management

You have been told multiple times by staff what's wrong. Patience is over. Act now or more good people will start to flee in droves.

I worked at Cenovus as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Great office environment. Ergonomic desks fantastic.

    Cons

Pressure of working with reduced staff. Change in the hours of work (from 1st and 3rd Fridays off to only Fridays before long weekends)

    Advice to Management

Can't really comment much on the grand plan of the functional model.

I have been working at Cenovus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cenovus is starting to recover from the low point of the downturn and they are hiring cautiously. Having moved to a functional model as part of their restructuring there is opportunity everywhere to help influence what this looks like as the implementation is still very much in progress.

    Cons

The hiring process is painfully slow. On boarding of new staff is terrible and you are largely left to navigate an outdated online orientation alone.
Some of the leadership have been assigned programs under the new functionality model that they do not understand introducing additional complexities for employees that are already challenged to implement a major change.

    Advice to Management

Go for a walkabout and get to know the workers and hear what they do. Be seen as approachable and people will tell you what needs to be done as they know. But that means being seen and not just at formal "ask so and so" sessions.
